Which WM phone?
Discussion
Wait for WM7 to come out, lots of HTC handsets won't be upgraded when it's released: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/03/02/windows_7_...
WM7 will beloads better less crap than WM6.5
WM7 will be
Do you have requirements for other WM progs or is it just the Exchange client functionality you need? I hate to say it, but the apple phone is very good at exchange mail/calendar/contacts.
I've spent the last year telling my guys they can't have anything apple because I really don't like Jobs, the image or anything about the whole apple thing. That was until the gaffer came back from skiing where all his mates had an apple phone. He said he was having one and that I'd have to support it.
Long story short - a bit of a revelation - it's really very good.
Far easier to set up and use than the HTC WM devices we had previously.
NB. I am still not an apple person but am big enough to admit Iwas wrong wasn't entirely right slagging off the apple phone.

i've had plenty of wm5/6/6.5 phones over the years and there all much of muchness. Choose the one you like which has a keyboard you can live with. Alternatively, the iphone works great with exchange and trounces all windows phones out there currently. Things might change when WM7 is out, but its got a hell of a lot to compete with.
The new HTC Desire on Android has Exchange compatibility - worth a look over WM6.5 at any rate..
"Your work email, calendar appointments, and contacts, are right there on your phone - you can even look up any company contact in the global address book. The HTC Desire also has enhanced support for Exchange security features such as password protection and remote data wipe. And, if you forget to tell your colleagues that you are taking the much needed day off, you can set the ‘Out of Office’ status right from your phone. "

I wouldn't say it does trounce WM phones, it depends on what you're looking for in a phone, I hate the iphone style pokey screeny keyboard. With proper buttons you know if you hit a wrong one. Also don't like the price and how you have to buy all the programs through their dedicated apps store or jailbreak it and void the warranty.I like WM because of the range of programs, custom firmwares and the openness of the programs. Wouldn't mind giving Android a go but couldn't justify buying a new phone to replace one that works perfectly well.
I'm an absolute Apple fanboy now, but this is to hook up to an Exchange server that I don't control and they'll only support WM devices. I don't know at this point if they've ticked the "allow unsupported devices" box on Exchange.
My iPhone works seamlessly against SBS2K8 and that's what I'd advise but I can't

Well... I've just unboxed the Touch2 - first impressions are pretty good - is solid, the on screen keyboard isn't too horrible, the TouchFlo system that overlays Windows Mobile 6.5 is rather nice and fairly finger friendly.
It's not an iPhone though. I really wanted to hate the iPhone, but after messing around with the Wife's for the weekend I'm an absolute convert - the GUI is excellent and like most apple stuff "it just works".

From what I understand the only decent WM 6.5 phone available is the HTC HD2. It is very well skinned by HTC to hide pretty much all of WM from the user, though some does sneak through occasionally. Its a good phone but still suffers from being WM though. Stick to the core functionality that it provides and its fine, try to branch away from this and it sucks - I cannot tell you how bad WM is. The market has moved on and Microsoft has been left well and truly behind. WM 7 is going to be available at the end of the year at the earliest - so you could be waiting for some time.
That said, pretty much everything now offers ActiveSync compatibility. Most Nokias, Android phones (usually via a third party app, but some carry it natively) and the iPhone all support ActiveSync out of the box and you would be hard pressed to be able to detect one from the other. I wouldn't let 'support' cloud your judgment though - lots of good choices around and it comes down to personal preference.
Does it really have to be WM?

i've got a ipaq 914c, which comes with wm6.1, although i'm running 6.5 no probs.
Same issues here, support only accept wm company approved devices, or bb's.
My ipaq has a full qwerty kb, which is the main criteria, everything else just works.
Battery life is the big bug bear. It was fully charged this morning, and is now flat as i didn't have it plugged in in the car and it has a BT connection active all the time.
Even without this, a couple of calls and reading emails, and it will only last about 15 hrs.
At least being mini USB charging it is straight forward, i normally plug it into my sky box when i get home

The only thing I liked about it in the end was Solitaire!
