Hello everybody, this is my first post on this particular board so go easy on me eh?

I'm in the market for a new car, budget of around £30k, and after much deliberation am being swayed towards the M5 which seems to tick most boxes for me. I have read a lot of the posts on here about the car and plan on continuing my research as the M5 is serious car with serious financial ramifications should you choose poorly. So, my questions are as follows:

1) Now that we have gone past 1 March and with a new 5 Series due imminently (if it is not out already - I know the new M5 is some way off yet), how do you think that will affect prices over the coming months if I were to make my purchase in May/June if the right car were to come along? Is it worth waiting a while? I am obviously after as new a car as possible with the least number of miles, what plate and mileage seems reasonable for my budget? I also know VED is more expensive post March '06.

2) What are the must have options? I know everyone's opinion is different but there must be some that are desired i.e. extended leather, Logic 7, etc.

3) I understand the BMW warranty is a must, whatever the cost given the potential gear box problems I have read about (is this issue resolved on the newer cars?). So, is it better to buy from a dealer and get a year included, obviously paying more, or buy private and then buy the warrantly on top?

I think that's all for now...

Cheers guys, look forward to any input you may have!

First of all, welcome!

When I was looking 14 months ago, this is the rule I went by -

Pre March 06 (to avoid the hefty TAX)
As many options as possible for my budget
Full history with running in service on time, plus BMW warranty is a MUST
Black on black, not only is it the best combo it is the easiest to sell on (apparently)

In regards to price, £30k will get you a good one, but avoid the 2005 cars, they were very problematic (do a search on the various forums. plenty of info). As with every car the longer you wait the cheaper they get, but I think around £30k for a good one will be the going rate for the forseeable smile

I've sent you an e mail as well wink

I was asking the same questions as you 9 months ago. I got a stonking deal on a 28,000m late Nov 2005 car. I suppose if you want one enough you have to take a chance, if you have a warranty though, it's a lot off the mind.
Resale? Ummmm, if you thought about resale all the time you wouldn't get anything. I intend keeping mine for another two years yet.

The further away from 60,000 miles the better as the warranty will double and may affect resale.

Touch wood, no problems yet. Except if you count the new discs and pads needed fairly soon.

Unbelievable car though.

Hi there!

I got one in the summer and love it to bits!

Do avoid the 05 cars if you can, as there were a number of issues with them (well documented).

A BMW used car, or a private buy with remaining BMW warranty, are the only sensible ways to go.

Servicing is condition-based.....it tells you "what and when" in the i-drive menus....can easily check with BMW customer services what work has been done on the car and when it was done.

Tyres are a major issue....PS2s are best, but are on back order....maybe going to be superseded by PS3s. Make sure they're wearing evenly....correct geometry is essential.

Don't let the higher tax band of post March 06 cars put you off....an extra £200 a year is insignificant in the context of this car.

As for options, I had my heart set on multifunctional seats, a so-called must have. In reality, I switched them off after 10 mins on my first test drive....found them silly and annoying.....only required on a track!! Full, rather than just extended, leather is quite an expensive option....looks a wee bit OTT? Logic 7 is fab....other desirables include bluetooth/telematics, heated rear seats, extended voice control (brilliant on longer journeys), high-beam assist, TV function....maybe comfort access?

Expect to replace pads and discs around 30K miles.....could be used to negotiate a discount.

Fuel is a killer......mine is currently showing 19.2mpg, based on extended weekend drives! Oil is consumed at a rate of about i litre every 3000 miles.....i-drive tells you to add a litre....must be the castrol M-series oil....buy from Opie Oils to save money!

I recommend the E60 M5 without reservation.....you'll love it for sure mate.....look forward to seeing the pictures (There is no way out now....you're on the slippery slope)

I bought one in Nov 2009 and it's my 1st BMW with iDrive. My advice would be go through the entire service menu and see how many miles left in each item. My problem was I didn't know it was like that and was happy to see receipts and the car had gone to BMW in August 2009 for a "service".

After purchasing and getting to know the iDrive I found the "service" it had was just spark plugs, needed an oil change in 1,000 miles, new front pads in 1,600 and a brake fluid change in Jan 2010. So it ended up costing me a few hundred £'s very soon after I bought it, wasn't happy but I should have asked on here first!!

BMW will put the warranty on the car for you and it would take effect 30 days after purchase, I think mine was £760 for 12 months.

Overall it's a fantastic car, not great on fuel though at around 160-180 miles off a full tank (70 litres), but well worth it!!

Good luck

I really wish you lot would stop going on about how realistic, rewarding, and affordable a warrentied E60 M5 could be wink

Complete fantasy for me at the moment, however just for arguments sake. If I were to be in a position to afford one of these cars, however thought that it was essential for the car to be a bit more vocal, have people had their warrenties invalidated with aftermarket exhausts?

160 miles is 10.3mpg... that just can't be right.

Over 18 months of ownership and about 25k miles mine has averaged 19.1 mpg according to the obc.

10 mpg is very achievable if you drive in stop start town centre/m25 traffic!

Fantastic car, really enjoyed owning it, the V10 was fantastic, as others have said, the fuel isn't great, i found I was filling mine up every 170 miles nearly. On a motorway run I got 250 miles which I was thrilled with!!

An option that I really grew to like was the Head up display, just became second nature to look at it and never got in the way.

If your interested or not to far away and if its ok to post... Heres my old one for sale at the garage I did P/X at, third car down. It does have HUD too

Yeah that's right! What you will find though is that when the light comes on and you go to fill it up you only get 50-55 litres in a 70 litre tank, so of course the light comes on with only 3/4 used as it knows the last 1/4 won't last long!

Therefore 160 miles on 50 litres = 11 gallons = 15mpg (roughly).

When i took mine to Le Mans i was getting around 90 miles to a tank and each fill up was around the 65/70 litre mark!!!! So they can be very thirsty but its well worth it due to the grin factor, buy one you will not be dissapointed!!

Did anybody see Topgear a while ago where they took 5 super cars, emptied the tank completely, then put 1 gallon of fuel in each and raced them around the track?

They drove them until they ran out of fuel and then noted how many miles they had actually done. The loser was the Enzo Ferrari covering a massive 1.7 miles on a gallon. I can't remember the other figures but the winner was the Audi R7 with something like 5 miles.

So driving hard you should aspire to < 10MPG!

Sold the car around 2 years ago!!! Not sure what the mpg was never worked it out, but the car was doing 2 tanks to 1 on a friends M3!!!! The car was the same if you took it on track days, its not hard nearly 2 tonne and 507bhp V10 i always found it to be thirsty but that could be something to do with my right foot wink

Fantastic car with a sports exhaust it sounds awesome but if you use the power, which is why you buy one in the 1st place and not a diesel, the fuel consumption is dire and when you take it easy it is just bad! I pay my own fuel as I came out of the company car scheme and found myself driving it very carefully to try and get some sort of decent consumption (never more than 20mpg) then I thought hey this is crazy so I bought a diesel 320 and got a Honda s2000 to have fun with for the same price! Don't get me wrong loved the car but as my daily runner it was too heavy on fuel.

Can agree with the other owners here, I can wholeheartedly recommend an E60 M5. I changed froma chipped 535d and there really is no comparison - the M5 is so special, handles like a much smaller car, so fast, fantastic noise, well build etc etc

The fuel is a killer though (mine averages 16-18mpg roughly) as a daily driver through country lanes.

Definately get a BMW warranty though. Mine is an 05 which a brought 6 months ago with 16k miles. just had new DVD drive, new central computer (idrive) and also an expensice gearbox shaft ?intermediate shaft all under warranty (no questions asked at all).

I wouldn't worry about 05 or 06 etc if you are getting a warranty as everything important covered anyway and there are some good deals around.

I would definately have the logic 7 and m-actice seats - i think they are great fun. Mine has full leather (the 5k option) which is nice but by no means essential.

Buy definately on condition. i saw a few ropey cars before I bought mine (which were a year younger and more expensive).

Let's not knock the 2005 M5. I have one and have had no problems with it. All issues resolved under warranty, so fine.

As a power saloon it is just awesome. I don't use mine daily as the fuel cost would be too high. Use mine on weeknends / hols and just love it!
