AS per the title, looking for something around 3-4mm thick, around 150mm by 1300mm ish
Have googled but all the stuff seems to be only 0.6mm thick and I would like thicker than that if possible?

You could try calling Art Veneers, Chiswick Avenue Industrial Estate, Mildenhall, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, IP28 7AY. 01638 712550.

But veneer is 0.6mm thick; I guess you need a thin plank.

These guys can make anything for you, but at a price: www.thorogood.co.uk/

Thanks, both local to me which is handy!

Will try to explain why I wanted it so thick, it is to be the face of a mantle that my dad is making for me, the top and bottom to be in stainless steel and the middle in walnut, I wanted the stainless to but up to the walnut as the edging would look better than the raw stainless (and easier to finish).
If I cant get it then I will have to have the stainless lip showing i guess....

Not sure what you mean by mantle.

How about packing 10 strips of veneer together? By the time it's sanded and finished it would look like solid wood.

Sorry, just to clarify, I meant mantle as goes above a fire place

That was my guess (I call them mantelpieces) - but couldn't really envisage one with stainless steel on the top and bottom and a thin strip of wood running in the middle. Too creative for me!

I know, i'm not sure if it will 'work' either but not sure what else to do.
The impression I want is a 6inch walnut mantlepiece with a stainless steel top and bottom, bit like a walnut sandwich!!
Any other contempoary mantlepiece ideas welcome!!

I'd rather have a solid walnut mantepiece with, if you have some s/s in it, a narrow band rebated into the front. However it would need to be a plank; if staved it might say 'Look at me, I'm a bit of kitchen worktop pretending to be a mantelpiece!'

What about a nice lump of elm?

Do you mean something like this? I'm looking for some as well, but they don't seem to sell it in the UK anymore frown

Excellent service, bought a load of mouldings from them. They only charged £10 delivery (to Ipswich) as they were going to be in the neighbourhood anyway. I couldn't get a 5 metre lengths of skirting board in car.

Was also considering rebating some metal strips in the front of it instead then placing the veneer on all sides, wasn't sure how the veneer would hold up against a log burner heat though at the bottom, hence the stainless steel idea!
I actually need to make 2 of them as the fireplace is a 'walk around' type thing, see below

Wanted the mantlepiece to be a bit chunky, around 6 inch sq, so planks wouldn't work.

Re elm, didn't want to mix woods as we have walnut floor and walnut kitchen, any other wood i feel would look a little random?

There are regulations now concerning the distance from a wood burner and wooden surround. That's why we couldn't install one where we wanted to.

OK< final offer - get an offcut of 40mm walnut worktop, cut to the size you want, then slap s/s top and bottom so it's flush all round. Bit like an ice-cream wafer... you only see the wood at the front so it doesn't matter if it's 1/60" or 6" thick smile
