I'm an American who has a few British friends, both here and in the UK. Whenever I travel to Britain, I always stay at a little place in Pangbourne. To make a long story short, I've fallen in love with the place and would happily saw off pieces of my own anatomy for the opportunity to live there. Sadly, British immigration will only let a Yank in if he's a brain surgeon, nuclear physicist or a bad actor, apparently.

Anyway, since I feel Pangborne is my "adopted" home town, I was wondering if any of my fellow PHers are lucky enough to reside in this little corner of paradise? Or any places near Pangborne, such as Purley-on-Thames, Tidmarsh or Upper/Lower Basildon? If so, then the next time you're at The Swan, The Cross Keys or The Greyhound, have a pint for me and consider yourselves lucky to live in such a beautiful place. Damn, I wish I were there right now!

Cheers,

John_R and Fast_&_Fatuous are Purley locals, and many of us are local enough to know the area rather well.

We should trade, i go to North Carolina every year to visit friends and family and i love it there, but i think that's more about the people and the weather smile

Let us know when you're coming over next, we never need much of an excuse for an eating and drinking session biggrin

Same Here smile I am in Cold Ash, so 10 mins from Pangbourne, Let me know when you are over smile

But honestly..... Why would you want to live here in the UK? Having lived in Florida for 2 1/2 years I know where I would like to end up. Also the immigration problem works both ways wink

I live in Purley on Thames. Lovely place to live apart from

a) When it floods
b) When it snows and you cant get out of the village

Other than that its great, espeically when the meadow behind is in full bloom with buttercups.

No pubs though which is rubbish.

No Keith, it's not big enough to fit a crate engine in there. hehe

Yep, in Purley. I regularly walk the dog along the river to Pangbourne. Next time I'm in any of the above mentioned pubs I will raise a glass to you, and as has already been said there are plenty of good natured locals who would be happy to meet up for a drink or a meal. There are some great roads out to the west and passenger seats are usually easily available.

Yep, did live in Pangbourne (right opposite The Swan which was nice!), now just down the road in Theale, but still go to Pang socially as the Out-Laws live there & the quality of Theale pubs isn't quite up to the Pangbourne standard!
It is a cracking place - I work in Slough, so driving from there to come home to Pangbourne was nice...you could just feel the stress sliding away..... cloud9

Used to live at the top of the hill, overlooking the valley. Nice place.

Wow, you lucky b**tard!!! You must have been right between the Swan and the railway station. I spent some good times there having a pint right on the river.

I really need to find a way to stay permanently. Maybe on my next trip I'll lose my passport and forget to leave?

Indeedy!! It is without any doubt, my favourite pub....of all time!! Its a proper "how pubs should be" pub.

I miss not being able to walk there frown

No doubt when the summer returns I'll waste many a weekend afternoon out the back, overlooking the river with a few pints. cloud9
