Any ideas how i can sort this irritating and intermittent problem.

I need to fold the mirrors to get her into the garage

Press the button and sometimes the passenger mirror will only move a short distance and takes several attempts to get it to go fully out.

Any ideas to sort this most welcome thumbup

Intermittent problems are usually due to wire issues but not always, try folding your mirrors several times with the door closed and the with it open, see if it suddenly works just fine or at least better with the door open. Wires in the rubber accordian boots between the body and doors like to break in anything related to a Ford. If the driver's side folds fine it pretty much indicates the switch is working but still doesn't rule out the passenger's mirror fold motor which could be dying.

If you can comfortably narrow it down to the folding motor then I would try sourcing an entire replacement mirror from a salvage yard. You'll need the vehicles paint code which can be found on the VIN placard usually found at the back of the driver's door jam. It will be under the line EXT (for 'exterior', meaning the exterior paint color) and will normally be a 2 or 3 letter and/or number code.

Changing a door mirror usually entails removing the inner door panel or a simple trim cover that hides the mounting nuts, which, with some tool ingenuity and a Haynes manual for the vehicle can be done by most level headed folks. IIRC on an S-Type the door panel does have to come off. Changing out the mirror is fairly easy, usually, getting to it's mounting hardware causes all of the swearing.. wink

Pasco,

I have a 4.2 V8 with the same problem, fortunately on the driver's side. I also like to fold the mirrors in to get into the garage.

The problem has been with me quite a while. For the prior 2-3 services I've reported the problem and the JMD has worked on it, mostly by disassembly and cleaning which works for a while but the problem retuns. A service is due at 90,000 in about a month's time so I'll be reporting the problem again!

I must admit it's annoying but I put up with it. If it was the passenger door mirror, as in your case, I'd be seriously p***ed off!

My mirrors fold fine (X308) but they then like to fold all the way back to beyond their proper stop position so that they go flat in the other direction (mirror facing outwards)

Anyone any thoughts on that oddity?

I've had this on both mirrors - fixed by removing the plastic shroud and spraying with WD40.

Got this issue on my S Type. Any idea how to remove the plastic shroud?
The motor definitely works, because if you give it a little human force the mirror returns to the correct position.
So, how do i get the plastic shroud off?

Its just held on by clips so carefully prize off using a suitable blunt tool (not like mine getting it bashed by a fast moving Focus frown )

I did it by hand. Press in the underside of the painted cover, in the middle, and it should come off. Squirt in WD40 as mentioned above, job jobbed smile
