It is with great sorrw that I stand before you all to state that my New Golf GTi (Diesel) is quicker through the gears, and when the turbo is up to pressure than the 400SE
.
It can easily outbrake my standard wedge brake setup, and as long as you keep the turbo spinning, has easily more power to hold the TVR at an arms length until you get beyond the 3 digits.
also, I have found a company that will supply and fit a 40bhp chip pushing the power up to around 180bhp..

Bloomin fast diesels, I don't knock 'em!
On my way to the TVRCC meet today in my Pug 205 GLD the only thing that went past me on the ring road was a Scirocco GTi (sp?) which I let past and then the bugger didn't pull away from me. I sat on his bumper until I turned off at the pub!
I'm inclined to drive the Pug in this manner because it doesn't mind and it doesn't feel like it's about to spit me through a hedge backwards when it gets towards the edge (unlike the SEAC). And as long as I walk away from the inevitable then I'll be happy (unlike the SEAC).

When was the last time your Wedge was dyno'd?
Last time I checked mine it was only chucking out 205bhp on the road and a shagged cam was eventually diagnosed.
I'm not going back onto the dyno until I fix a few other things that were identified at the same time. Fingers crossed not too long.....

Jason, I had a new cam last year and put-off getting the 1000 mile adjustment needed once the cam bedded in. I felt like it was driving OK, just a little down on power.
When I did get it tuned the difference was simply staggering.
Have you had a retune and lifter adjustment in the last 2000 miles?

Jason i reconise the symtoms when i had my new company mondeo tdci i posted on here that it would outpace my 350i well beyond the legal limit .......
Literally weeks later the camshaft started making loud protests. To get to the point a reconned 3.9 motor plus loads of other stuff was fitted at RT Racing.
Not that we should but last Monday afternoon i took the bait from a guy driving a Lotus Elise as we entered from an island onto a stretch of dual carraige
for 30 miles i tailed this guy as the odd car or lorry pulled out knocking us down to 40 or 50 i was sitting
in 3rd his initial take off was maybe 1 car lenght faster but using 5500 rpm max i was all over him...
We pulled into a service area and having a chat he admitted he was redlining in 3rd 4th and could see he wasnt going anywhere. Not being a lotus fan i do not know the figures for the Elise but i bet its faster than your Golf?
Mind you he did say the fuel never dropped below 35mpg even caining it I think i must have used half tank.

Sorry chaps but if it wer all abowt speed we kan all go owt n buy a EVO or STI Impreza Av done that miself, its all about style and the sownd and the fun you have in the Wedge not to mention the great days out with the others.
Am sure if spped mattered that much sod the car get a Hyabusa not much will touch that 2 or 4 wheeled that you are gonna bump into on a normal run owt.

I haven't just bought a TVR... I've bought a way of life.
My best mate bought an EVO 8 (fq 300 or something)last week. Saturday night I over heard him blagging to some girls about how fast it was. The reply was "yeh but whos the guy with the really loud red soft top-you know the one everybody looks for before you see it"

EXCELLENT...Lifestyle AND speed - that is what it is all about. It does matter a bit that a Wedge will beat other motors - I blew away a Golf GTi twice in the last few months on the same stretch of road - and I don't think it was a diesel! I would find this worrying. Diesel cars are not noted for their acceleration - lots of low down grunt which is fine and ou don't need to stir the gearbox like a Christmas Pudding. Modern cars of course will be all over a Wedge on bumpy windy roads and corners. If you are saying that a diesel GTi will keep up with a Wedge 400 then you are suggesting it will keep up with a Ferrari 355/360 or a Jag XKR etc. etc.. Somehow that doesn't ring right - if it is I'm on the lookout for one of those diesel Golfs.
On the rolling road bit - BHP at the wheelswill always be less than BHP at the flywheel - losses through the transmission etc.. Shouldn't worry about it!

Hey guys, I was just making a statement. Im as much a wedge fan as anyone, but I was so impressed with the performance of the Diesel Golf, the handling and the braking for a eurobox, when I put it up against the TVR It was a real shock. The engine needs to be setup, and will probaly get around to doing that over the next few months.
Actually, if you really stirr the gears, it will keep up with an elise ( ok 0 - 60 is a humble 8 ish seconds, but mid range its the dogs )

I was of the same oppinion. Get to a VW dealer and test drive a 130 or a 150 diesel ... you WILL be suprised.
The turbo comes in at about 1400 rpm, and pulls strongly to about 3500rpm, snatch the next gear to keep the boost and you have one rapid motor that can average 45mpg

The need to have a Diesel Company car following changes in the tax situation was the reason for buying a BBW to start with. The sound of a cold start diesel does not match a V8. Getting me into TVR ownership is about the only thing I think I can thank Gordon Brown for.
However, I did recently take great delight in going into a BMW dealer and pointing out that my 17 year old TVR appeared more reliable than my 1 year old 320d.
They accused me of putting petrol in the 320d because they could smell it. when I showed them the an old TVR fuel pipe that I was replacing in the boot they soon found another source of the problem. Still £5k worth of work and they eventually got it sorted. Less than I paid for the wedge. I know which I get the most enjoyment driving!!!!
