Why does there seem to be a large number of dead badgers lying on the side of the road? Surely they can't all have been hit by vehicles?

It was a game started off by the Badger brewery, some people took it a little too literally.

Badgers are not overly popular with the farming community, particularly dairy farmers, it's illegal to kill them or interfere with their setts. Some landowners may be aiming for them if they're seen on the road, or killing them and dumping the bodies on the road.

Fewer badgers normally means less TB in a herd.

The young are born around February, lots of territorial disputes happen amongst last years males and they get kicked out by the dominant boars. They go off to find new areas or abandoned setts to set up home...and get flattened on route.

In a month or twos time there will be lots of little dead ones as this years young start to wander about or have had their mums killed and they are forced out by hunger.

Or dodgy people have shot/dog-fought/cleared setts and dumped them at the side of the road. It's tough being a badger.

I nearly hit a dead one on my bike the other day. I think it's the first time I've seen one in the wild, they're bigger than I thought.

Result of an ongoing turf war twixt the badgers and moles.

The moles engaged in an operation akin to the Viet Cong Tet Offensive and overran many strategic badger positions. The bodies you see are essentially propaganda material relating to this success.

Farmers shooting them and just dumping the body at the side of the road.

There is a shortage of dead badgers in Scotland. They are wanted to make dress sporrans for the the Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders!

There are usually on back order at sporran makers since the only way they can get the animal is through accidental road kill and they are not cheap, a new badger mask sporran can cost you over £1000.

A serious answer - it's mating season and the males are roaming.

Yes, they are hit by cars. Makes a hell of a mess of your front end, as a mate of mine with an Alfa GTV found out - £400 for a new bumper.
