Badger roadkill

Why does there seem to be a large number of dead badgers lying on the side of the road? Surely they can't all have been hit by vehicles?
Badgers are not overly popular with the farming community, particularly dairy farmers, it's illegal to kill them or interfere with their setts. Some landowners may be aiming for them if they're seen on the road, or killing them and dumping the bodies on the road.Fewer badgers normally means less TB in a herd.
The young are born around February, lots of territorial disputes happen amongst last years males and they get kicked out by the dominant boars. They go off to find new areas or abandoned setts to set up home...and get flattened on route.
In a month or twos time there will be lots of little dead ones as this years young start to wander about or have had their mums killed and they are forced out by hunger.
Or dodgy people have shot/dog-fought/cleared setts and dumped them at the side of the road. It's tough being a badger.

There is a shortage of dead badgers in Scotland. They are wanted to make dress sporrans for the the Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders!

There are usually on back order at sporran makers since the only way they can get the animal is through accidental road kill and they are not cheap, a new badger mask sporran can cost you over £1000.
