Motherwell, hire car, a free afternoon, any ideas?
Discussion
In spite of my rather Scottish surname I have only been to Scotland about 10 times and don't really know the place at all. I have about four hours to kill tomorrow (post a meeting in Motherwell) and either a Corsa, Mondeo, family wagon or Ka (choice) to thrash the living daylights out of for the afternoon. Does anyone know of any decent driving roads around those there parts?
I've been to Largs on the West coast a few times lately and on my last visit, returned from there, cross country on the A76 to Lockerbie and joined the motorway there.
Really nice road only spoilt by a couple of towns which didn't take long to get through. So head West from Motherwell and I'm sure you find some decent tarmac... they did invent the stuff afterall.

Thanks, I wonder if there's a Go west, north, east then end up at Glasgow Int route I can plan, avoiding the M50? Motherwell is a dump. (I was born about 15 miles away in Lanark). Died on its xxxx when Ravenscraig closed. Hamilton, Wishaw etc equally depressing.
Best bet would be to head west on the a71. Good driving roads, but don't expect decent pubs.
If you have enough time the area North of Glasgow around Strathblane, Lennoxtown is pretty good hooning territory. As are the roads around Lanark, Biggar (nice little town),Carnwath etc.
Or head towards Edinburgh across the moors. The road between Carnwath and Edinburgh is the one that made me want to get a decent car.

Couldn't go on the longer routes but this one was good and had a couple of proper hair pins at the start of the cross country route.
