Get a Bosch one, In my experience they last longer than Black & Decker and are about the same price.

Bosch green for home use, blue is the professional (higher but not the highest quality)

Power will of course depend on what you want to use it for etc. But you can get a 14v about £200RRP blue one for about £60 if you shop around

Do you mean the chuck?

If so, when you slide it on the shaft, open it up fully and look inside, there should be a central machine screw/bolt which will then hold it on. (sounds like you may need a new screw though wink

Does is need to be cordless? I was looking for a cheapish drill recently too, but ended up deciding that I would get better bang for buck with a lightweight mains drill. I ended up getting a decent Makita 10mm variable speed jobbie for a fair bit cheaper than a lower-end 14V bosch. It's awesome.

A blue Bosch for £60 will be sans battery though, non?

Hi,
Screwfix amd BandQ have a deal on an 18v DeWalt drill, with 2 batteries. It's £99, and it's fantastic!
I brought one, and for the money I think you'd struggle to get anywhere near it. Also a screwdriver too (2 gears)

So what's the best then? I've been using my DeWalt very heavily since moving house and it's a great bit of kit, the torque it generates is insane.

Depends but roughly

Hilti and Milwaukee at the top top end

Then Blue Bosch and Makita

Then Dewalt

Then all the smaller players like Ryobi

Then the chinese knock off tat at the bottom.

yep, b&q selling the 18v makita with 2 batts for 90 quid.

I took back one of their own brand sanders earlier as it broke within 2mths. didn't have the receipt so they said I can only get a refund if I brought in my bank statement. I have just found statements going back 12mths (length of electronics guarantee) so will be taking half a dozen of their range back and getting a pair of makitas. fk you b&q .

They can hardly give you money for old broken tools unless they know you bought them there!

Lucky you didn't buy them from Sleepmasters!

I got that one and it's nice, but the hammer action is pointlessly weak so I would probably have got a cheaper model and only ever used it for screwing and drilling wood. I got a £50 corded Ryobi SDS thing and it's literally 30 times faster at drilling masonry, I wouldn't advise anybody to bother drilling masonry with anything other than a nice heavy SDS drill!

SDS drills are perfect for masonry but not appropriate (too big, heavy and clumsy) for light or precise duties.

If I could only have one drill I'd go for a decent corded hammer drill. Below that you can have an average cordless one for light duties, and an SDS for serious masonry.

I've owned some of Wickes' own brand Pro range and they're high spec and solid for the price. I recently bought their 18V rotary drill/driver with 2 gears for £60 in their sale. Came with two battery packs! and a one hour charger. Plenty of torque and enough speed on the higher setting for domestic jobs.

ETA. I dropped it out of the bedroom window once and it bounced off the drive without breaking.

b&q own brand, where else would i have bought it? the inference was that I had stolen it which pissed me off due to the fact I've spent about 5k in there over the past year and know most of the staff.

Same here, but it might be that the green is ~10 years old and the blue is 1 year old

Without getting into an "in my day" thread, I think quality generally has gone down but they keep bringing in new top of the range stuff

Senor Plotloss, no that was with 2 batteries, charger and case
