Satin Black Paint

Has anybody got real world experience of this finish? Is it durable, does it pick up marks etc.

Trawling the net brings up the usual continuum of gibberish.

It's a complete nightmare! It shows up any imperfections and needs to be kept clean to look its best. I'd go for a matt black vinyl wrap if I wanted this finish because when you get fed up of it you can get rid of it.

Thats the conclusion I am coming to..

Not too bothered about the satin black - just need to throw some temporary paint at the car prior to proper painting at a later date. I was just thinking satin black would be a quick fix.

Paul got a quote for £1500 to wrap his Ultima in matt black and as has been said it is not difficult to go back or change later.

ive got a few contacts for vehicle wraps, let me know if your interested, ill put you in touch with them. They do everything from, carbon fibre, matt black, chrome etc.

Painted Stain black is a pain because anything you tend to do to it brings up a shine. T cutting a scratch Waxing etc, so if it's not perfect out of the Spray gun, or if you damage it you have to respray it...... Friend has a 73 Cuda with the Satin Black bonnet and strips and is paranoid about it, would never buy a Car that had them.... IMHO

It must be an age thing - I can't make my mind up whether matt black is very cool or seriously naff...........

... I agree, the Tempest is painted matt black. I decided to build this 10 weeks before Hot Rod Power Tour last year, so Jeff had no time for paint or interior. The whole concept was a rugged race car, so it doesnt matter if its a little tatty here and there. There's a reason matt black is the colour of choice for rat rods... it looks ratty very quickly. If you're going to do it , a wrap would definitely be best.

A matt or satin clearcoat applied over your basecoat will avoid the problems encountered............
basically clear lacquer with a differing proportion of matting agent mixed to give the desired level of end effect. Ask for some plasticiser to be added in area's subject to stone chips etc. Most quality bodyshop suppliers should be able to assist.

Sorry but not my taste, saw a 360 Fessa done with Vinyl last year and hatted it..... but each to there own, I do Appreciate that some people might actually like the idea..

So wrapping a bus for advertisement is one thing, but what does the wrap look like close up on a supercar? In the photo above I can clearly make out a joint line all the way down the front hood/fender (wing) on the drivers side.
