I may pop over to Nene Overland tomorrow as they have a couple of decent looking vehicles - well they have about 50 but budgets etc..

Be interested in opinions.

It's a reasonable trip so I wondered if anyone knew of anywhere else in that neck of the woods that might be worth a small detour?

I'd be coming to it from Tamworth direction.

Thanks.

RJ landrovers in Sawtry down the A1 are pretty good nice guys to. Footlose 4x4 don't really sell much but may know of something for sale. PS RJ's shut at 12:30 so you'd need to get there sharpish Theres a couple of places over lecester way to. MRM is one but they apparently dont have the best reputaion. IF you want a second pair of eyes to view anything PM me as I'm in peterborough

Thanks for that, I just phoned RJ's and they have something that sounds like it may be of interest and they're near Peterborough as you say so I intend to set off a bit earlier than planned.

Obviously "no naming and shaming" and all that but RJ's website put me off a bit tbh as it looks pretty poor - now I know a good website doesn't equal a good company, but any feedback/info on them would be grand.

Thanks.

Because the mark up is so high on the vehicles they sell they can afford a supadupa web site - big deal !
When I was originally looking for my 110 XS I found one that fitted the bill for sale on here and contacted the seller - I couldnt view until later that week so I recontacted him on the day I was due to travel and a Nene buyer had beat me to it.
A week later and the vehicle surfaced on thier website for £3500 MORE than it was forsale on here !
Not the first time apparantly, so just be aware that they are expensive.

I bought my 50th from Nene. I know there prices are high. But at the time they had the best selection of 50ths by far.(and i had been searching for some time)I can a couple of little points on the LR that i pointed out. It was dealt with by them before i picked it up. I didnt have any problems dealing with them.

I dealt with Tony Fullager.

I appreciate and accept that, I think my point was more that if West4x4 hadn't mentioned RJ I probably wouldn't have called them because I'd stumbled across their website through autotrader and for whatever personal reasons a poor website always makes me think badly of a company much more than a flashy website would make me think the best.

Funny how a single message on here can instill a bit of confidence though smile

I ended up buying an 05 plate Defender 110 Td5 XS from LandRover main dealer for less than any "specialist" had similiar advertised for.
I managed to negotiate the 24k service as part of the deal along with 12 months LandRover approved warranty, rear load/dog guard and rubber mats in front, rear and load area along with an adjustable tow hitch and twin electrics.
Have covered 7k miles in the 7 months I have owned it and it has now covered 30k miles.
Also came with an interesting MUD number plate !
Have a look at LandRover Approved - you may be pleasantly surprised !

Nice village, nice bloke (big older chap didn't get his name) but sadly nothing suitable in stock as the one they'd had in yesterday was, by his own admission and he himself hadn't seen it until today, not very good.

He has my details and gave me some info on who he thought was worth looking at and avoiding a little closer to home.

Nene was interesting, lots of cars but as I expected most of them top money and mainly newer/more expensive than I want to go.

Right now I think I've noticed a bit of a trend where it seems the odd M/N/P plate or there abouts comes up either privately or at a traders for between £5-6k. Then there seems a sizeable jump to around £9k for an S/T plate, and then a (relatively) not so big jump to around £11k for an 02 plate.

The latter is absolutely the top that I'd spend and it would really have to be a stunner to make me spend that kind of money. The middle doesn't seem to offer good VFM, not sure why but £9k for an S plate just seems too much, so it seems I'm going to be hunting for a tidy original M/N/P as at that sort of money I should be able to find something nice and it won't lose much, it may just take until hell freezes over to find one.

Being blunt I could go out tomorrow and just buy a new one - but "second car"/"bit of fun" means I have to have some self-control/common sense or whatever you want to call it.

Essentially I don't want to buy a newer expensive one for the sakes of waiting for the "right" cheaper older one to come along just because I'm impatient.

Thanks but yes, don't need 5 doors but even if something perfect came along a 110 is just too long.

Rogers in Bedford. They were more honest with me. Nene didn't have any prices on their cars on display and when I enquired they asked 'what's your budget?' I'm a bit long in the tooth for that sort of game. Rogers, on the other hand, were more interested in my £4k budget and offered me a £5500 car for £4k on a sold as seen basis - ie without it being tarted up and given a warranty. they also gave me a lot of info I didn't know abour early Defenders - such as they didn't do a Station Wagon on the 200TDi until 1994 just before the 300TDi came out as they didn't want to compete with the Disco. So almost all 200TDi SWs have been converted.

Thanks for that, another one to try.

I emailed a shedload of specialists last night and have got a couple of contacts who have said they'll keep an ear out.

Funny, your budget is exactly what mine was!! I managed to get a 1991 Defender 90 for £2800 eventually on e-Bay - and it has rear seats, rear windows and Kumho Tyres on decent alloys - so if you shop about you will eventually find something. Mine needs a few jobs doing but I'd prefer it that way - in fact the previous owners knew nothing about cars and were scared off by a large garage bill just for a fairly minor service!!! As long as you're prepared to do some work and don't that the vehicle won't be perfect (at 20 years old!) you should be able to pick up a bargain. I would avoid dealers if possible as they always mark up their prices and won't necessarily give any warranty on such an old car. If you buy cheap enough it will give you some 'contingency' if something goes wrong.
Happy looking
