Looked at a couple of things on You Tube today and each one had an ad of up to 30 seconds long before it played.

Didn't even bother waiting for the content to come up.

The market's wide open for a You Tube replacement site now....

Well it can only rely on Google's deep pockets for so long. They need to pay for servers, bandwith, people to remove all the porno etc...

That does seem a nuisance, presumably the best thing now will be to download the video then skip the ads, bit like I do with TV films. I'll need to be sure the video is worth it though.

Wait, hold on, is this on all content?

Can uploaders get paid on this or is it purely a money making exercise for Google Inc?

Either pay for content and storage or watch adverts. People set sites up to generate revenue you know.

I'd rather an ad at the start than all the stupid boxes that have started appearing over certain videos...

I thought that's why the ads came up around the side, ala Pistonheads and the rest. The up to 30 second ads before content just seems a bit too much to me..

I've just viewed about 20 YouTube vids, didn't get a single ad?

What context were the vids, were they from a commercial source, or 'home movies'?

The problem is that people who use the internet a lot develop "Ad Blindness" where anything in the expected locations/of the expected size is automatically ignored by their brain, doubly so on sites they are familiar with. This limits the effectiveness of traditional adverts and means that high bandwidth sites have to try new things.

I've seen a few on big commercial youtube pages, Sony, Playstation or video game developers.

It's a money making exercise for google or rather, a money loss mitigation method for google. Youtube costs ~$5 million a month in bandwidth costs alone plus the servers, techies and people who have to trawl through removing all the dodgy content.

Free lunches are all coming to an end. Someone has to pay for them, and banner ads aren't doing it.

Crikey, a free website valued at billions with no actual product or method for generating meaningful revenue that even remotely covers the stratospheric costs of running it - whatever next?

Steady on now. Next they'll have to make a profit, and thats just the slippery slope...
