I see a lot of this style of chair around and really like them - they are always customised v cool but the frames are v similar. How are the frames of the chairs likely to be made? will they be a mold and lots are produced - if so where could you get just the frame from? if not a mold how are they made - carved?

Carved wood. It was a skill commonly used to make furniture before factories were invented smile

Cheap picture frames are made from some kind of recycled plastic... can't remember the name but if it can be extruded into frames I suppose it could be moulded as well.

Mind you those Chinese are jolly clever - if they can paint fake Grand Masters for £10 a pop I guess they can carve wood too... (while we Brits are too lazy to wire a plug)

Dead easy, i make these all the time, the frames are standard, carved by machine in china, you can buy them in "the raw" which is just plain wood ( normally beech/ash ) then you put your own finish on them after, either satin, polish, wax, paint etc.

After that you upholster them, ideally spring the seats, or you can web them with quality Pirelli webbing ( not elastic ), Good quality foam, fabric/leather of choice then finished off with either braid or studding to your choice.

Frame cost is about £40-50 ex VAT in the raw, about £60ish finshed ( painted, polished etc ) Upholstery, i would charge you £150-200 depending on what you wanted.

Yeah they are funky.

A mate of mine peddles this kind of tat out to fancy London types.

He buys blanks and then gives them about 5 coats of different coloured paint and distresses them back.

Nothing dishonest involved, he clearly tells his customers they are reproductions, he can't trash furniture fast enough apparently.

where does he get the blanks from - new frames or just old chairs?

He used to just buy old random pieces that he thought looked interesting, second hand shops, house clearance companies etc. I think he buys new repro stuff now as well, will ask him where he gets them from.
