Recently bought a 320td, have never driven a RWD car so need to get some views from those who are in the know but the arse end of this seems to step out incredibly easy without any provoking.

It's happened about 6/7 times today, not going fast, just on the throttle to keep a constant speed going round a corner/roundabout (in the dry). All I can say is thank god for DSC.

The tyres are brand new and are Ceat Tornados. Having looked about the general consensus seems to be that they're crap, is this true?

I just googled this brand of tyre (never heard of Ceat myself!) and came up with this: http://www.tyretest.com/pkw_sommerreifen/ceat/torn...

They seem to be crappy budget tyres which would explain lack of grip. If I was you I'd get them changed for some decent rubber.

Yes, they're crap.

There are a few square inches of rubber between you and oblivion. Replace them for something with some grip.

Terrible.

I'd be seriously worried buying a car from somebody who would fit those, makes you wonder if they could really afford to run the car. But its yours now, no point dwelling on it, just change them for 4 premium tyres.

BMWs loose the back end when they have mixed tyres front and back, but if they are new tyres all round and it is still doing it then it must be down to them being crap.

Set of Kumho KU31s can be had for very little and they are great.

Apart from the fact they are hard, noisy and not very progessive at all.

They are good for the money, but I think the Kumho KU31 at the same price is a much better tyre.

Don't get me wrong, I have had 5 sets of FK452's, but they are not the best even for the price.

Hold on, I am presuming all 4 tyres a new??

You haven't got mixed brands front and rear have you??
BMWs hate this and can become lethal.

Brand new as in BRAND NEW? Most new tyres take a few hundred miles to bed in and will be slippy until then.

If you've bought a budget tyre and they're still 'loose' after bedding in then more fool you. You get what you pay for.

To clear some things up-

I did not buy the tyres, they are new but have a few hundred miles on them now, they are the same all round, I have come from a FWD car but am not provoking a reaction from the car and I'm not even talking about wet roads.

Would lowering the tyres pressure at the rear help for the time being?

Depends on what pressure they are running vs recommended. If the only recommended pressures you can find are for factory runflats you might get some luck on one of the BMW forums - 3 series/Z4 forums etc.

Of course it might just be 'normal' for the car - we don't know how you define gentle driving.

Oh, if they're directional make sure they are on the right way round.

Compacts didn't come with run flats as standard though did they?

Believe me it's gentle without provoking the throttle. I can't see it being normal for the arse to step out at 15-20mph so often.

The trouble i've had with tyres on my E46 made me think of selling the thing! then i found falkens FK452s. Not perfect (bit noisy) but tranformed the car and is now a pleasure to drive.

Sorry, I should have checked more closely on what car it was. I don't think they had runflats like you say.

Could it have been a one off slide caused by dirt/diesel on the road?

No, it happened about 6/7 times yesterday.

I've got Falken 452s on my 330ci and it's grips very well indeed. A friend of mine has winlongs or something equally crap on his 330ci and it's shocking just how poor the traction is, borderline dangerous...
