Guys, as the title suggests I am in a position at work to swap the Golf (57 plate, 70k miles)for the BMW (58 plate, 40k miles). Clearly the BM is a far nicer place to sit, with all round quality being better than the rattly VW. It is also far more efficient and has ED with start/stop etc.

I specced the Golf from new and have loved its torque and driveability, but have become frustrated with its rattles and agricultural diesel lump. At 29, I'm ready for a little refinement that it doesn't have.

So, my dilemma? I think the BM will feel very underpowered compared the the VW and I don't know what to do.

What are your suggestions?

Ironically, the trouble i had with my 120d (177) was trim persistently falling off, and paint, come to think of it. Was surprised how rough the engine was too.

Wished I'd considered a Golf, like my friend's one, which felt quicker. Useable bac seats, at least.

Sticks is one of the exceptions.

Autobild magasine has just rated their 1 series as 'the best long termer of all time' that they have had on their fleet, which is pretty impressive considering the metal they have had.
They said that at 100,000km it felt as good as they day they got it.

I had 2 1 series now and found them to be perfect trim wise.

I would certainly take the 118d over the Golf, the driving dymanics more than make up for a slight drop in power.
You are going to be around .7 seconds slower to 60mph.

You could always get a tuning box??

Maybe, maybe not http://www.babybmw.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&amp...

I'm not going off on one again smile but all I'd say is if you're buying new or nearly new, have a look at what else you can get for the money. I've loved my other 2 BMWs.

It would seem you are alone, as the topic you were hoping to link to doesn't exist, must mean no other complaints biggrin

Seriously though, the back seating area certainly isn't the lagest in class and the door opening is a slightly odd shape, but it genuinely mystifies me how people consider them to be "unusable". I've got an 8 month old and her car seat has just as much room in my 5 door 123d as my wife's Mk1 Seat Leon which is basically a Mk4 Golf. She's recently got a Mk2 Focus as a replacment and there's a little more room in that, but not by very much. If you're 6'4"+ with long legs then room behind the drivers seat will be tight but then it would be a similar story in most other cars in the class, I'm 5'10" and can easily sit in the back behind the drivers seat in the position I use to drive

You can add me to that list. I much prefer the Golf range over the 1 series until you get to the sportier models. The 1 series interior isn't anywhere near the quality of the golf, though you can't argue with the configuration of the drivetrain

cant you stretch to a 120d? 177bhp instead of 143bhp and they are rather nippy. come across one by amersham in my 330ci and was suprised how nippy it was

If one was on the fleet I'd be able to. This is an existing, yet immaculate example. I'd rather have a 123d, believe me!

+1

I'd much rather have a golf over the 120d we currently have on the fleet although the driving position is nice the rest of the car doesnt seem that special although that said the higher spec models are probably much nicer.

End of the day its really down to personal opinion

I must admit having had a 120d ES as a loan car when mine went in for service a few months back, it didnt feel anywhere near as nice inside as mine (123d M Sport with leather), despite being newer. I couldnt really pinpoint anything significantly different other than the seats, the steering wheel/gearknob and the manual air con controls, but it did add up to a significant downgrade in the quality feel so I know what people mean.

Might be an obvious choice that you ruled out (due to it being the same car/engine) but Audi A3 is a very nice place to sit. I had a 170TDI for a while as a second car to my 911. But I think a 120d or a 123d would be better than the 118d in your case..

Just my 2p worth, smile

This is the M Sport so has half leather and sports seats with a rather attractive brushed aluminium dash.

The Golf has developed lots of rattles and feels baggy whereas the BMW is still rather tight. It will also save me considerable 'monies' as a result of its meagre 119g/km as opposed to 156g/km with the Golf.

sounds like your minds made up anyway wink

my bad for suggesting the 120d when i didnt fully read your first post

just go for the 118d mate, it will hardly be slow and if you dont like it just swap it for something else as it seems your in a position with work where this is possible smile

Personally I think the interior quality, build and design is a let down compared to the previous gen E46. Hopefully the new 2011 model will address this.

118d will save you about 50% a month in income tax

I have one, with a tuning box. It's nippy enough but the Golf is not a bad car either. My colleague has the 140 GT but baulks at paying £60 a month more than me in tax!

Sorry for not checking the link before. Here is what I meant to post http://www.babybmw.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&amp... Great forum with lots of helpful people.

If you're mind's made up, fair enough. Mine was, seemed ideal for me. I'm not bashing BMW, but I wish I'd thought or read more into it. I'd have a 3 Series again without hesitation.

Btw, dealer reckoned the 118d was the best for performance/economy balance.

go for it. The m sport trim is pretty nice. We have a 118d m sport and a 120d m sport coupe, we have had 4 1 series now and done about 180k miles and never had any creaks rattles or even any warranty repairs, which is very impressive.

I think you will notice it will feel slower than the golf, its obviously less powerful but the delivery will make it feel slower but its more linear.

I am willing to part with my Promotech tuning box for the (2007 on 143hp) 118d, as my car goes back soon. Takes you to 170+hp

Drop me an email if you want it.

ETA: It was £450 when I bought it, looks like the pound has weakened quite a bit since then! (Now £528)

What appeal does a £500+ tuning box have when you could get a Superchips Bluefin remap for less than that, which includes the handset etc so can be installed / removed by the end user?
