Built-in Kitchen appliances, What the hell am I paying for?!
Discussion
Looking at different Double Ovens and Microwaves, but I can't really work out why some are so much more expensive than others. I know the old saying you get what you pay for, but what makes a Bosch worth £250 more than say an Indesit, other than big controls than pop-out when you push them?!
Also, why is a built-in Microwave £350 when a similar spec standard Microwave is maybe £50 - £100?!!

There may an economy of scale factor, but otherwise (seeing that a bilt-in appliance doesn't need side panels or tops) it can only be because people with good taste are supposed to have more money...
As for brand, cheaper ovens look quite nice from a distance, but when you touch the controls they're just wobbly bits of silver plastic and the door jerks shut with a 'clat' sound.

This is what puzzled me when shopping for an oven recently. The Bosch ovens we looked at had fancy pop-out knobs, but they were just those same wobbly bits of silver plastic - felt horribly cheap and nasty. So we ended up buying a cheaper Asko one that had much more substantial feeling controls.uncinqsix said:

It's amazing isn't it, what with them being German an' all. I bought a Siemens oven in 2008 and the buttons do feel nice. However some neighbours bought the 2009 version and whilst still nicer than average, by contrast you can tell it's been made cheaper - but has trendy blue LEDs in it...For £500+ you'd think they could put decent ally knobs on it!

Wrong, it's because they are designed to ventilate differently and fit into a unit
Yep, it costs much more to cut slots in a built-in microwave than in a freestanding one. They're special slots you see, made of an invisible and gas-permeable substance called Slotonium
