Firefox is really chugging these days. I suspect it's because it's remembering every site I visited since November 2009!! How can I get it to remember the last 5 days' worth of sites max?

Tool>options >privacy tab

it's there at the top, you can also fiddle with clearing private data near the bottom

Thanks. I already found this and had it set for "5 days" not "5 months". I note the word "minimum"...

As an aside, I noticed the location bar settings. That was pissing me off as it takes sooooo long.

On XP goto c:\documents and settings\<%username%>\local settings\mozilla\profiles\<%random characters%>.default\

On Windows 7 / Vista goto C:\Users\<%username%>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<%random characters%>.default\

and delete urlclassifier3.sqlite. This has al the url's you've typed in, visited etc and takes an age to parse. It's the one thing that slows Firefox down to a crawl for me.

Did this work? Firefox is taking ages to start up for me...

I was on v3.5.8 which had been fine upto yesterday, and did hope the update to 3.6 would sort it, but if anything it's worse!! I've had a Google, cleared my cache (with Ccleaner), deleted my profile, removed add-ons and extensions, and even tried it in safe-mode, yet it still takes an age to start... (30-60secs ish)

I'm tempted to bin in and give in to Google's World Domination!!

What's stopping you downloading/saving it?

Would it help if I or anyone else emailed you the setup.exe?

Now that Chrome has extensions, I ditched Firefox about a month ago. Fed up with the lockups in FF.

I used to be a convert to Firefox. Have given up with it and moved to Google Chrome.

I'm a long term user of Firefox, but have got sick of the extremely slow performance and lock ups of late. Changed to Google chrome on the strength of this thread. Seems to be much quicker.

Yeah I've been having problems with Firefox and Facebook chat, seems to make my whole system drag. No such problems in the IE though confused

I installed Chrome this morning... Quite like it's minimalist look...

Not so keen on the ad-blocke though, it seems to load the ads then hide them, rather than preventing them in the first place...

Lightning quick startup though... Love it!

I'm using Firefox 3.6 and it consistently takes 5 seconds to start up and fully open 8 tabs. Thats plenty fast enough. To change between each tab is instantaneous. I don't seem to have a problem with it - great browser IMO.

I notice that I keep having to click reload for many web pages in FF. Any thoughts?

For any site, or just particular ones?
