Does anyone make VW Beetle bodies in fibre glass as in whole bodies, not just wings and things but the actual body?
Also, in the same vien, Skoda (as in 1970's shape) or Karmann Ghia whole body shells or Porsche 911. Covin come to mind for the 911.

All my searches are coming up with nothing.

Thanks, Graham.

Wizard Roadsters are a name that I remember from way back, but I'm pretty sure they're out of business.

Actually, just found this: http://www.z2web.co.uk/beetlezone/kits.htm

ETA: Not sure how much is original car though...

Hi Graham, I'm not sure that someone makes a complete replacement body in fibreglass for a VW Beetle, but if you like Hot Rods, this one looks great, I'd love to have one in a dream garage.......smile

Do I like hotrods?
I 'did' hotrods in the 70's and to the mid 80's!

The Beetle is just great, and such a stiking design.

My attempt in the 70's;

I found a VW in 'glass in the USA as an amphibian car/boat!

Am I searching in vain?

There is a company in the USA who do full bodies i believe. They were the people that wizard bought a roadster, van, coupe kit off, took moulds and started their own business! (so i'm told)
I can't remember the name but i looked at their website recently. Will post up when i remember it.

youve probably seen the sports libre and silhouette saloons bodies on the hills before, think theres at least a couple of skodas still doing the rounds in the channel isles.
the ex-Tony Sugden super saloon skoda is still around, maybe someione still has the moulds?

The formula 5000 based beetle silhouette circuit racer was restored last year iirc, so the moulds should be available for that.
i think you know Graham Wynn (loton regular with a Z Cars mini monte Carlo) he was parked next to it in the paddock at oulton park iirc, as he circuit raced the Monte too. He may have details fo driver from entry list/programme, im sure he had some pics of it in the background of his car

The Fun Cup racing series uses Beetle shaped bodies. You can buy parts from their website. Might be worth a look.

Thanks to you both.
I know the Mini driver from my hillclimbs and it is for sale.

The Beetle is very very much the ideal body I'm after.
When the car was being restored, I contacted the owner/restorer by email and asked about a replica body but had no reply. There must be a mould for it as they remade so much. Great looking car, and would be perfect for a hillclimb car.

I'll delve a bit further!

the silhouette beetle is the ex Mick Hill car. i was at Cholmendley Pageant of Power drivven by David Taylor, not sure if hes the new owner though. http://www.ferrariownersclub.co.uk/happenings/2009...

i might have made this up, but i thought John Cross prepped or ran a rallycross beetle back in the 70s/80s? he runs X sport i think its called, a prep company that does a lot of GRP body work (rallycross panels).

I've asked over on the 10 Tenths site for info on the Beetle.
Also, the Dubois Racing people make glass beetle bodies for theFun Cars racers based loosely on mid engined Beetles and the shells are full glass ones complete with tilt rear clam shell for good access, just the ticket and not too expensive.

Will investigate further.

the fun cars shells are similarly 'aerodynamic' as the original barn door beetle, at least the mick hill version has got a smaller frontal area, even if it does retain the near vertical front screen.

you reckon it will drop over the Lola? ;-)

Maybe....

There is a series of restoration pics of the Mike Hill Beetle coming back together, but i can't find them just yet.

The body is very channeled (that term shows my hotrod roots!) though it does keep the screen as you say, so very useful in heated laminated glass for hillclimbs.
The wings are stretched appendages for the simple purpose to cover the rims, thus the wheelbase issues can be stretched to suit.

The Fun Cars gives the right basics to work from.

I actually want something more exotic in the form of a replica Porsche 910 race car shell, but cannot find one.
The 910 has the same wheelbase as the lola(!)

In all these thoughts the position of the driver to the mid-ships bulkhead is the key element.

Anything will drop on this!

from the video, it seems only a mould for the rear section was made, the front being repaired?

910 looks a bit low with your current roll hoop.
if you could be ar5ed, then making a 'buck' bodyshell from wood, filler and expanding foam, paint it and then take moulds could be done. Not as difficult as some would have you believe, but very messy and time consuming, or costly if you farm the job out due to labour.

if you do wish to have a go at the GRP mouldings, let me know as ive done a little mould making for my hillclimber and will be at Loton (although only spectating rolleyes this season) april 5th

For the 910 the rool hoop would be new and a 'screen' loop formed. The car had this when it was a Karmann Ghia Super Saloon in the 80's.
I have in the past hotrod days done my fair share of 'glass work and the mess/itching was mad, so not too keen!

The Mike Hill Beetle has a steel centre and glass rear/front. Possibly quite heavy compared to the Lola body i have at present.

A custom body would need to be based on a windscreen form, and a '910' type (ie 917 etc)are remarkably pricey, hence the Beetle is of interest.

When my car ran the Super Saloons it has a glass Ghia body and the mould still exists! It is one whole piece but that is not a real problem....

I will be at Loton but not in any car. My wife is the Sec of the Meeting so i will be the chief Gofer over both days unless I am press-ganged to marshal!

Went to Race Retro today, and met David Taylor the restorer and owner of the killer VW Beetle V8 which was there in all it's glory.

This has made me think hard about the 'glass Karman Ghia body that my Lola used to wear in the 80's:

Whata machine!

These are the chaps i was thinking of. They once offered to ship a full fibreglass body to england for me, many moons ago.
