We've bought my parents a seven week trip to the USA as a Chrimbo pressie (to see my Mums ageing sister - could be the last time).
They're having trouble finding travel insurance at a reasonable cost - best quote so far was about £800.
Age Concern and SAGA were about £1200-£1400, almost the cost of the flights!

Neither have any bad health issues - Mum (71) has glaucoma in one eye and my Dad (75) is on tablets for mildly high cholesterol.

Any ideas for decently priced insurance?

Thanks.

I bought my mother a flight ticket to go and stay with my cousin who lives in Turkey. It was a present for my mother's 80th birthday, she makes the trip usually twice a year and it is only now that she's turned 80 that insurance has been an issue. Prior to that it's always been quite reasonable (£40ish for the policy) this has now increased to £80, somewhat cheaper than the figures you've mentioned.

I have found these so called sites catering for "older people" to be more expensive than the normal run-of-the-mill insurance companies.

Try Liverpool Victoria or LV as they like to be known these days, they have been quite competitive in the past. You could also try www.staysure.co.uk who specialise in insurance for the over 50's.

The problem might be that they are going to the USA. Renowned for extortionate health care costs.

Try here, "Worldwide" cover seems more reasonable than most:

Sorry, I haven't had chance to look at all the details myself but have a look at http://www.columbusdirect.com and their annual package.

Thanks chaps.
I've passed the details on to the olds smile

Age Concern and Post Office were the most expensive of the ones they've tried.

I helped my dad do his insurance last year, as he'd just turned 70 and the policy he'd been getting for free with his bank expired/wasn't valid.

I just did a quick google search and found him something for about 80 quid which was for worldwide cover. Unfortunately that doesn't cover him for extreme/winter sports though wink

Definitely avoid the age specialist firms...Saga etc as they were quite a bit more expensive. Think he ended up with goldfish or something. Got a feeling we did a search through the Which? pages too.
