Well, we're back smile After a lovely break in Fort William, and a bit of touring of the highland area. I managed to stop a few times to take some pictures, while SWMBO used my compact to take lots of photos.

As you can see, we certainly had a lucky mix of weather. The worse we saw was on top of Applecross pass where it was snowing, other than that, it's been a gorgeous few days away.
I must say, I've not done any of the views any justice, and my photography skills are nowhere near good enough to even begin to convey the awesome views around every corner.
Thanks to Steve Carter and his excellent site for giving me the inspiration to travel up there in the first place, and the pictures on that site for a view of what can be achieved with a lot more skill and time than I've got smile

You were standing about 100 yards from my house when you took number 1

I was looking out for you Aston, but was also keeping my eyes on the singletrack road ahead!

What a gorgeous spot you live in Steve. We stopped in Torridon at the newly opened cafe. The owner apologised as she was only practising prior to the start of the season proper, but we had a scrumpcious piece of cake and coffee while there, and learnt of your thespian abilities as well! smile

Thanks for the comments viper, that's much appreciated.

Some nice photos there...and given what we've had weather-wise you didn't do too bad! Where were 11 and 12 taken, by the way?

Oh...Eilean Donan...is it possible to take a bad photo of that place?!?

Looking forward to our trip in May now...there's an outline route & overnight plan in the Hols & Travel forum, in case you feel like sharing your knowledge... biggrin

Edit: Steve - what road was your "Slow (Only kidding)" photoshop taken on?

Love the pictures! Will be taking a bike trip in the first week of April, Land's End to John O'Groats on some crappy chinese motorbikes. Haven't even taken my CBT yet. But I am so looking forward to the Scotland part of the trip. Almost thinking of trying to spend an extra day up there. Just down to cost at the end of the day.

Hope the weather will be a bit warmer haha.

It is in Glen Docharty. Half way between Achnasheen and Kinlochewe.

BTW Craig... Aston now sold, Another Caterham Superlight on order (& 2011 new shape RS4 if they make it). Coffee shop is ok isn't it. Mate of mine just bought this and is going to be running boat trips from the pier starting April: http://www.safehavenmarine.com/SEAFLOWER.htm - next time you're up.....

Cheers Steve...just added that road to the list (think it's already on your 'circuit').

Seaflower looks like fun...now how to convince Becs she won't get seasick on her?!? ;o)

NSX for definite. In some ways the 'teg is more fun - much more exploitable by an amateur like me, and (surprisingly) it provides more feedback. But on a fast road (3rd gear +) the NSX comes into its own.

If you're around May Bank Hol weekend, would be nice to meet up for a coffee/pint if you've any spare time, put a face to a name?

Edit: Athlon - check my new thread in Hols & Travel for our route, and also Steve's website (http://www.stevecarter.com/bestuk.htm) for what looks like a stunning circuit north of Skye.

What I would say about our trip is to leave yourself plenty of time to drive these roads. The scenery is so stunning, you are constantly stopping to take photos and take in the vastness of it all. Progress is therefore somewhat slower than you'd plan for.
I did Steves route on day 3, well tried to smile as the amount of stops meant that we didn't manage to get round all of it and had to take a shortcut back to the b&b before dark. Singletrack roads are also not the best for making progress on, not least as your passenger will not appreciate you going too fast on all those blind bends and crests!
The locals tend to go a little quicker than you too. So prepare to be overtaken as you take in the views smile
We were there for 5 days, 2 days of which were just getting there and back, and the 3 days left to sightsee had us barely scratching the surface of the amount of things you can do in that area.
We will be back for sure biggrin

What havoc says...

As you leave Skye over the bridge take the road to Plockton in Kyle of Lochalsh, then from Plockton follow signs to Lochcarron, Applecross, Shieldaig, Torridon - and if you have time turn left at Kinlochewe towards Gairloch and Ullapool.

Martin - almost certainly be here. e mail me close to the time and we'll arrange a meet.

Having seen the pictures on this thread, I'm putting that in our route at the end of this month. May have to stay in Scotland an extra day though lol.

thanks.
it's the commando memorial. They did most of their training in the area during the second world war.
