Just seen an odd thing in the sky...
Discussion
I just thought I woud start a thread to see if the space station or some other Russian, US, Chinese etc. type thing has flown overhead in the last ten minutes.
It's a beautiful clear night here in the north west and about ten minutes ago I looked up into the sky looking south and there was a bright orangey light in the sky, like a large star bit with what looked like red and green streaks of light emanating from the top. They sort of looked like anti collision lights.
There was no noise, and it stayed in exactly the same position for a few minutes before disappearing, it just faded out.
I am familiar with most types of aircraft and the lights they display, but this one has got me completely stumped.
Feel free to take the piss (I expect nothing less) but I would be happy to hear any ideas or if it was indeed something orbiting high overhead and reflecting the light from the sun back at me. I regularly like to spot the space station and satellites as they go overhead, but this was different, and much brighter.

Definately UFO then, how far was it away do you think?. Personally I think we can not be the only lump of rock with intelligence on, although at times that is debatable, and having said that would why "Others" come to see us?Not taking the piss, but my view has always been that it is probably us in the future, we have found time travel, and come back to see things. You may laugh, but that is my belief.

Maybe the spacestation.Have a look in Boats Trains and Planes someone has posted a time table for the times it may be visible this week.
No need to trawl, it's all at http://www.heavens-above.com/.It was most probably just a lantern, they're sold everywhere these days. There are many reasons why it wasn't humans from the future

The coloured streaks bit make me think it was meteorite in the upper atmosphere burning up. You would not hear it and the dark makes it hard to gauge distance. The angle you see it could make it appear to be stationary.
??
A meterorite that was large enough to be visible for that length of time, you would indeed hear, and even then would disappear abruptly within a few seconds. I've heard a few, most awesomely the huge one that lit up Mt Cook while I was stargazing ??

Edit, stargazing, not starging.
