Leaky diff, but which type?

Hello, couple of posts now as it's the first time under the Cerb. Can someone tell me if this is the Hydratrak diff? Not sure if you can tell from the outside. If not how do you tell? Leak appears to becoming from the end cover which strikes me as being a bit odd?

Anyway the Hydratrak diff has a small groove machined into the output shafts next to the toothed section.

if you have a 4.5 then it is 99% likely to be hydra.

thats the same as the one I have just had refurbished - BTR Engineering - normal LSD diff, not hydratrak AFAIK? My car is a 98 4.2 V8.

Plus...looking at the photos oil appears to be leaking from the prop shaft main input bearing or seal and then wind (as the car moves thro' the air) is dragging the oil backover towards the back plate - maybe worth checking as this is the exact same thing that happened to mine and is fairly common.

I'll take a better look at the prop input shaft for the leak. It's a 4.5 late 98 so I was under the impression that it was ging to be a Hydra diff but you it appears not to befrom what you say. Really just wanted to know so I get the right oil for it. Looking at the hand book it rekons the same for both diffs, but think i've read recently that they use different oils. I know the hydra is a sealed unit inside the diff.

All 4.5's came with the Hydratrak as standard. They were an option on the 4.2.
Both diffs have a BTR casing.

On the first photo on the left hand driveshaft you can see the small groove to the left of the teeth, this I believe indicates that it is a Hydratrak.

Interesting - apologies shoggyraminator (?) - didnt mean to mislead anyone. I thought the diffs were physically different...ie, externally - it appears not (or very little anyway). I would still check the prop shaft oil seal as thats more likley to ne leaking - cant do any harm.
