I think I can guess the answer but thought I'd ask.

I am employed by a company as a PAYE employee. It's my full time job and I don't work anywhere else or have a LTD company on the side.

If I were to spend a few thousand on a formal training course (relevant to my current job but my firm won't pay for training), is there any way I can get some tax relief back?

Just wondered if there is a scheme whereby the Government may want to give me an incentive to extend my learning.

NB: This would be a professional course and not a degree.

NO - unless your employer INSISTED that you take the course.

Expenses can be claimed against employed income if the expense was incurred "wholly, exclusively and NECESSARILLY in furtherance of your employment duties".

A personal decision to undertake a course which would HELP your career but was not absolutely essential for the job you were hired to do, would fail the "necessarilly" test.
