Any recommendations for a short term hire of Iridium/Thuraya satellite phone? (or alternatives).

A shade unfair the question was recommendations, so would really expect some additional advice or anecdotes as to who was best or who to avoid.

they do hire for 4x4 overlanding trips- so its basic but reliable. know of a couple of people who have used them with no problems.

Cannot help. But is it true they only work outside? ie. they must have a direct view to a satellite.

Andy, I've used all of these people in the past but am slightly out of date as to who is the best value for money - you'll need to do some calling I'm afraid.

Cellhire
Paradigm: suppliers to the troops for welfare calls
AST: I used their outlet called TMI 2000 (Southampton) - ask for Richard Harris.
Satcom Distribution: Ask for Graham Leitch

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, thanks Phil. I've found a company 'Mobell' who do a £5 per day hire plus calls. I'll give them a try as that was about the cheapest on the hire market and they sounded OK on the 'phone. I've got a few Thuraya carcasses and ideally just wanted a SIM, but they only have the Iridiot handsets so I'm goosed, still, it's just for 10 days so not too bad.

£1.85 per minute to landline and a £7.50 per minute to another sat-phone - guess what we're not getting for xmas...

morningside - yes, you need line of sight and need to be outside, at least, the aerial does - you can remote it from a 'base station' or car holder though.
