I'm just about to go for my 1st Ipod (have previously been a Sony user for years), so the 1st question is, Ipod classic or Ipod Touch? Which is the better, if there is one, I've read the reviews etc would like the input of my fellow PHers.

At the moment I'm drawn to the Touch, purely because I may like to convert some DVDs occasionally to watch on it, are they good for movies (again used to watch stuff on a PSP)? If so can anyone recommend any decent conversion software?

If you don't need humungous amounts of storage space that the classic offers, then iPod touch every time. And even then, there are 64gb ones to be had.
Very cool little things cool

Well, the classic can do movies, but obviously with a smaller screen. I used mine on the plane before, and it wasn't too bad. Personally, I would go for the touch if memoory isn't an issue. I was very surprised how much I used mine. They really are a good bit of kit.

As for converting flicks, use handbrake ( www.handbrake.fr ), and that has iPod touch presets.

One thing I would ask, is what format do you have your music in?

All my music is in MP3 at the moment, didnt make the mistake of using ACTRAC or whatever the damn thing is called.

Have about 24gb of music on my laptop so Touch 32gig would be the one.

Your going to laugh but the reason for the change is two fold, firstly my Sony is about 2 years old now so I fancied a change, and I was bought a Sony CMTBX700 for my birthday (mum thought that as it was Sony it must work with my Sony player) and as it has an Ipod dock its a good excuse to change (and I didn't have the heart to tell her) wink

If you have 24 gig of music, I would actually suggest the 64gig... That won't leave much room for movies, or TV shows, not to mention apps, or any audiobooks you may have.

G'day Carl

I would say it depends where your taking it to be honest. if it's not going to bed chucked about in pockets in with keys go for the touch, if its going to be used a lot I would say classic due to it being more solid and longer battery life.

Not going to use audio books, movies will probably be watched and erased for each trip (depending on how much size they use) not sure what apps, if any, I'll use. I'm one of these people that likes his gadgets seperate, phone for calls, Ipod for music, camera for photos and the main apps I'd probably want would need wireless connection and my laptop goes more or less everywhere with me.

As to where it is kept, it will be in a nice protective case and nowhere near keys etc, I know that mistake of old when I had an Orbit phone.

Without meaning to hijack the thread, I;m in a similar position - thinking of getting a touch but am a little confused about iTunes etc. Currently all my music is stored in Windows media player - is there some sort of conversion process to iTunes I will have to go through or can the iPod sync with Windows Media?

I know my touch has been very immune to keys, coins, pens, thrown in bags, etc. The rear of the case is marked, and scratched, but the screen is as good as the day I bought it.

To be honest, sounds liek the classic would be better for you.

Doug did this yesterday, uploaded ITunes, it found about 50% of my CD's automatically and loaded them, the others I just flicked through the 'upload' process and was done in a few hours, the longest job was sourcing album 'cover' pics for the ones that couldn't be found automatically.

It's not what program you use that is the issue. It is the format. What format are your music files in?

Itunes did convert the 3 cds somehow I had dowloaded to WMAs however it made them all seperate files and I had to bulk regroup them into albums.

I would guess that the battery life on the classic will be a lot better than the touch.

The classic would be a fair bit more robust too.

Will convert it all with the tags intact. Just might take a while to get through 24GBs worth.

I'm glad I chose the touch over the classic.

I find the battery life on the touch to be decent - If you are using it just to listen to music you will easily get more than 24 hours out of it. It has enough battery to watch 2-3 full length movies with no problem. If you leave wifi switched on it does drain the battery faster, but you still get pretty good life.

The touch doesn't have a mechanical hard drive, so in that respect it is more robust against shocks like accidentally dropping it. The larger screen is a bit more vulnerable, but that is easily solved by keeping it in a case.

The other thing is that the touch has tons of apps, so you can extend its functionality to do a lot more than just play music and films.

My Touch is over 2 years old now and has the Invisible Shield clear plastic film. Has survived all sorts of clashes with coins, keys etc.

Mine's only 16 gig but being a flash drive, I have had no problems unlike the hard drive of my old 2003 iPod.

Would not the hard drive of the classic use more power than the solid state iPod Touch?
