My Sons partner owns an Clio 1.2, its done 36,000 miles from new. We noticed an fairly large dollop of mayo on the engine oil filler cap and this to me suggests head gasket blown. They had just returned from an good 20 mile trip suggeting its not short run condensation. Any other causes? Likely cost of repair in an indy East Anglia garage ? Thanks.

Not sure what happened with thread title???

I wish i had a quid for every time this one comes up in pre booking customers conversation at the shop rolleyes what winds me up is they notice st like this but when the temp gauge is planted in the red and steam pouring out the bonnet they press on to the next exit rage in fact i had a woman enquire about the mayonnaise in the filler today (latish Beetle) but didn't notice the car was running on 3 pots only irked she replied.....is it?

No, but people make that stement all the time.

Where on earth they have got this rubbish information is beyond me.

And as Simon says....people would drive a car with blatantly obvious faults and not bat an eyelid, some even major faults.

yet if the car is driving perfectly fine, and they see a little mayo on the cap...OMFG the HG has blown.

Like really, where is there any sense there ?

Fair enough, its what I said to them when I had an look at it. So 300 quid for head skim and gasket and put back together by indie seem about right? haven't asked garage for quote but that's my guess.

if that's the only symptom you have for a HG failure....may as well pay them £1000 for the job.

Apparently the car has been running rough for an while, we put this down to the oxygen sensor. Cleaned up the oil cap and things seem OK, must have been short runs in the cold weather. So thanks for all the advise, saved us some worry and cash.
