I know it's two years away, but I can't stop wondering what the ideal PistonHeaders first car would be. Insurance needs to be remembered. The budget would be £3,000 and the car should hopefully be safe, but still fun to drive!

No GT3 badged Carreras please!boxedin

Cheers!

If you want to go with the mainstream then most hatchback with about a 1.0l or thereabouts should do. Just dont crash into halfords!!

However if you want to go PH, think outside the box, theres all sorts thats cheap enough on insurance. Have a good look at classics and kit cars.

I hear Porsche 924s can be had as a first car, depends if you can insure it on a classic policy at your age or not though really.

The insurance is the killer and the more common they are for young drivers (the ones with a tendency of putting them backwards into hedges) the higher the insurance will be even for a completely dull shopping trolley.

Whatever it is don't get a complete money pit unless you're willing to do lots of spannering yourself and if it is a dull shopping trolley don't mod it, just gain NCB with it and move on when you're ready.

I had a 1987 1.1 Peugeot 309 GE.

It was cheap to insure and was big enough to get my leg over in the back.

A bottom of the range Focus, Astra or Golf with the smallest engine option will probably be cheaper to insure than the equivalent Saxo, 206 or Corsa for a new driver.

2 years away?

You might even hit puberty by then if you lucky!

Thanks for all of the suggestions, it's got me thinking. Mabye a French four-door? There are some super value ones out there. Perhaps even save a grand for if things go wrong, servicing etc.

I've alway thought a 316i Compact would make a good first car only being a 1.6 and RWD chassis smile.

Other than that, someone on here bought a Rover 600 as a first car and it was cheap to insure, maybe a saloon like that or a 406/Laguna.

It's getting something interesting, different, and with reasonable insurance.

I'd say good luck but you have plenty of time to plan smile.

I was looking at a few Laguna's, never thought of the Compact before though. Nice Cerb

EDIT:

Some of those 316 Compacts aren't bad at all. Never knew they were RWD, either - an added bonus! Probably wouldn't make a difference for me until a few years of driving experience, though. Nice suggestion anyway!

You really really don't want a 316i. 114 BHP, 1300KG.

Less BHP/Ton (and overall bhp) than my 20 year old 190E 2.0. And my 190 is quite slow.

All I would suggest is a crappy hatchback, at 17 with 0 NCB and if you want fully comp you need to be prepared to spend most of your cash on insurance, because either way its going to end up costing much more than the car is worth. Sorry but thats the way it is. Just keep the crappy hatchback for a year or two to build up some NCB, THEN get a nicer car.

Yep I was looking at them before I got the ZR. And found the insurance was suprisingly cheap, cheaper than my 1.4 ZR! Had a look on parkers and realised why, 12.x to 60!

Still nice looking cars IMO aslong as they arent a base spec model.

The thing is, I don't want a fast car until I've got some experience under my belt. I'm afraid that when I get behind the wheel of my own car I might get the 'red mist' (as my Dad calls it!), not caring about anything other than going quick. Safe and slow, for now!
