Canon G11 - any alternatives?
Discussion
Having looked at these recently as a comparison against bridge cameras (specifically the Panasonic fz38) I came to the conclusion that it wasn't going to add anything much apart from the solid chunky feel. Did plenty of 'handling' comparisons, etc.
Only comment I'd make having gone ahead and bought the vastly superior spec'd fz38 is that it's low light performance is fairly average, doesn't feel as quality but in regular light I can't see the G11 touching it. Oh and you'll save a fair bit of dosh. I'm also coming from an slr by the way.

Love the GF1 but with lens its outside my budget
Darn it - I want it!
I'd try to make the stretch, it's a hugely better camera than the G11 and is most probably what the Canon 'G' line will become in the next couple of years or so.

Wow! Some fantastic images taken with that camera are making me think of ditching the Canon 950is I use as a point and shoot. Although I'm sure the scenery help.
A +1 for the Canon S90 - I bought one to replace a G10 because the latter really wasn't a pocket camera, and the S90 is. Unless you need the optical viewfinder or hope the G will stop a bullet, I'd go for the S90. I used it very successfully with an ultra-cheap pocket tripod I got from a magazine cover, on a recent trip to Las Vegas, and got some very pleasing night shots.

I'd agree with going for the S90 unless you want the optical viewfinder. I'd also agree with stretching to the GF1 if you can. I went from a Canon G9 to the GF1 and the difference is amazing. The only thing is to watch is size. While the GF1 body is smaller than the G11 once you have the 20mm pancake lens on is it deeper. With the Panasonic kit zoom lens on it is a lot deeper.
