My wife's laptop drives me bonkers. I know I shouldn't be playing with it, but she asked me to install something.

When you hover the cursor over (for instance) the Start button, there's a sound from the speakers that sounds just like someone clicking their fingers. It seems to do this when hovering over some, but not all, icons, and when clicking on stuff, and I don't know why.

Can anyone tell me how to stop it? I won't of course (it's not my laptop), but I WANT TO KNOW WHY IT'S DOING IT mad

Thanks all

PJ

Possibility that you may be getting feedback from the on-board microphone. Also do you still have the noise if you turn down the volume/speakers?

No feedback, microphone is disabled. If speakers turned down/off, can't hear sound. It's not the noise of the mouse button, I'd say it's a .WAV file.

But I've already demonstrated that I know nowt...

Somewhere in control panel you can set up sounds. I'm on Vista and I presume this is XP and I can't remember the exact place. However I'm sure I had something set to go "click" on mouse over on XP at some point. Have a hunt around in the sounds setup and see which setting makes the same noise.

I've tried everything. I've gone all the way through Control Panel, and I can't find anything...

In control panel open Sounds and Audio devices. Click sounds tab. In the program events pane scroll down to 'menu pop up' Highlight it and select <none> from the drop down list.

Nope, still nothing. It's not the Accessibility Settings, and it's not the sound settings.

I found out it's the windows default "Menu Popup" noise, but that option's turned off in Sounds.

So why is it still doing it?

AAAAArrrrrgh!

What make is it?

Dell used to have a "manufacturing mode" which caused a click on key presses. fn+X on bootup turned it off.

Asus. It was mine, and it never made that bloody noise when I had it!
