I had heard of craiglist and thought it was just something for america but had a look and available in the UK. Has anyone got any experience with it? There is some horrendously cheap stuff on there among the normal things.
Probably a case of "if it's too good to be true..."!

scam scam scam. You see them on gumtree as well, 600mm/4 lenses for £500 where the seller wont meet and exchange the lens for cash as they have "moved overseas" or similar, so either requires paypal or some kind of escrow service.

if you pay by paypal you can raise a dispute and get your money back if all isn't ok. When the dispute is raised, the money in the other persons account is frozen.

true but I don't think that affects you getting the money back though.

Yes it does, if the money is gone from the account where do you think they can get it back from?

You have absolutely positively no rights or protection with PayPal, however you fund the payment.

Surely if you funded by credit card you could just call them up and tell them to recover the money from paypal.
