whats the cheapest 944 to run/fix
Discussion
Pre 86 944 cheaper on brake parts, otherwise the running costs are the same. The "what if" cost of the 2.7 is scary, since if the engine lets go you will struggle to find a replacement, similar to the 2.5 16v S.
In terms of performance, the S2 and Turbo (in standard form only) are as cheap as each other to run, so my advice would be to buy the best example of any model you can afford with a history file full of receipts and low mileage.
Also avoid the 1988 cars which tend to suffer from sill rot for some reason or other, can cost a grand a side to fix properly.

I would say the early (1984) model would be about the best, if you can find one with reasonable miles and a bulletproof maintenance record. The climate control knob, for instance, costs about $40 on one of those, but on the 85-1/2 it would cost around $400 to replace. The basic 150-hp SOHC 4-cylinder Porsche motor has just about all the low end torque of the more expensive models. They're well built cars, a bunch of them were built so all the bugs would normally have been discovered after a few thousand hit the road. They have just about all of the engineering basics of the more expensive cars too, and the basic motor was strong enough for subsequent turbocharging with some mods, naturally. All said and done, it's hard to beat a good '84 as far as value and reliability.
