Hello,

i have a door in my flat that leads to a communal stairwell. Before this door used to be a fire door, it's now permanently block off however the door remains.

What I want to do is have it blocked off on the inside and have have it plastered in order to make it look like the door was never there. The outside finish is not important.

What is the best way to go about this? Would plasterboard or dry wall be solid enough?

The most important thing is that the wall needs to be solid.

Thanks in advance.

First, is the fire-door officially or unofficially blocked off?

LOL, thought someone might ask this.

No, it is officially blocked off. Sorry, I should have stated it was a door used to access the fire escape and now there are two other methods to leave the flat.

All building work has to be approved by the managing agents anyway but they have approved this.

Anyway, onto my question biggrin

Well, if plasterboard is solid enough you could use that - but with a 3x2 up the middle of the doorway for support. Well that's my DIY guess anyway smile

How's the rest of the wall made up?

You say the 'outside' finish is not important but to who? I would think that the state of communal areas or external views would be important to the Freeholder, other Leaseholders and the Manging agent.

Assuming there's a wall to build off, then stripping out the door and toothing in new brickwork isn't that hard and will be the most secure and sound resistant.

You also don't say whether it's external or not.
