Anyone think that Auto mode is a bit rubbish - or do ine need to reset the ECU some how?

When you in town approaching round abouts etc. and slow down on the brake then accelerate (not hard) it seems to hesitate and then dump the clutch which makes for a rather uncomfortable ride....

Mine was always great in auto mode-no problems at all(I had it on setting 3)
The sportshift on my v8v is dreadful in comparison

No problems here. Auto very comfy in town or heavy traffic. Also depends on the gearbox setting (M1-M5) of course. For me M2 works best in said circumstances.

I like auto mode in most situations, but I am aware of the issue you mention. I used to have a significant lag in this situation - slow to say 13 mph, gearbox takes time changing to 2nd, you accelerate, and there is a delay before the new gear engages. I have had two DCT software updates (done on warranty) of which the latest was about October. Since then there is no lag, but instead there is a significant jerk as the system drops the clutch to get going immediately in 2nd gear. If you think in terms of a manual box, you would have to take a moment to engage the new gear before you started to accelerate. I drive in a way to avoid feeling this.

Overall I find the DCT brilliant. What I like least is that it does not stop or start as smoothly as a torque converter auto, particularly in slow traffic. Also, ideally I would like S1 upchanges with S4/5 downchanges (ie I would like smooth upchanges, and blipped downchanges). In practice, I only use D2 or S1.

You may want to complain to BMW and see if they will update the DCT software to the latest version, as I think this eliminates or reduces this problem.

Hi all - finally got my car to a dealer and they plugged it into theie computer and it's says tere is nothing wrong! - can anyone tell me gearbox software versions etc.?

I have the 2010 model (december 2009 built) and NO LAG from the M-DCT box.

BMW seem to have a policy of not telling their dealers what has changed in different software versions. When they update a car's software, it is a several hour job which updates all the software in the car - they cannot just update the gearbox software, for example. They are therefore reluctant to give free upgrades without a good reason. With my 2008 DCT car, I think the software version which eliminated the 'lag' was called ISTA/P 32, introduced about September 2009. I have recently paid for an upgrade to ISTA/P 37.2, but there has been no significant improvement in gearbox performance.

If it's any help mine is in to the dealers this thursday (for the third time!) to have the latest software loaded on. The dealers will tell you that nothing is wrong, however keep pushing. I eventually said unless they proved to me the box had the latest software I'd phone BMW direct - low and behold and there is an update! The dealer showed me the guidance BMW produced and basically it is listed as a non-critical update (but nonetheless an acknowledged problem), so you have to kick up a stink to get them to do it.

Mine is in to have version 2.37 if that helps, at the moment I am on a late 2008 code and the lag is doing my nut!

Well I promised I'd report back...

...and what a difference! No more will it / won't it give me power when rolling onto a roundabout. Where you used to get a lag you now get a little flare of revs and immediate power. Much better! The car also seems more willing to drop into first, and where it used to select 6th when CC is on at 30mph - now it pulls 5th. Little changes but has made it feel like a new car.

Phew. That's the thought of a p/x for a C63 out of the window!

it seems that despite me asking the dealer to do an update to the latest software my car has this problem, it is going into another dealer on Tuesday - what is the best way to persuade them of the problem?

Telling then you almost had a horrendous accident pulling onto a roundabout due to the lag - that adds a measure of seriousness to the conversation.

Keep pushing, it is well worth it.

well they insisted I took their technician out to show him the problem and of course it would not do it!

anyway, they do seem to have fixed it - it is a bit rough now (they did warn me it would take some time to settle down again) but I have not had it happen again since.
