Just a look on Autotrader and out of 100+ that fit my criteria only one is the 2.7D, and it has a stupid mileage. Maybe this wasn't such a good wheeze after all.
OK, apart from that, on a budget of £8-10K, and looking at cars in the 80-100K miles bracket with full history, what model/year XJ should I be looking at? Which are 'best' and 'worst'?

Lots of info on the aluminium bodided XJ and a full road test of the 2.7d on Honest Johns (Daily Telegraph) site
Easiest way to simply identify the models from XJ40 on is - X300 from 1994 to 1997 is the last 6 cyl engined car with rectangular indicator lights and a single chrome strip on the bumpers and the X308 (1997 to 2003) is the first V8 engined one and has two quarter bumper chrome strips and oval indiactors.
The X350 you mentioned is from 2003 onwards is the aluminiun bodied car and the first XJ with a diesiel engine as well as a choice of a petrol 3.0 V6 and 3.5 and 4.2 V8s

You need Jaguar racing Green then.
Whenever I've borrowed a S Type Diesel I've been disappointed in the MPG, averaged 28mpg or something ( my R is 22 )

NO jags do 50mpg, not even the 2.0 and 2.2 X type deisels.
If you want an 2.7 XJ your looking at 15K+
The 2.7 (xj or S-type) should do close to 40 in the real world.
What about another blue one.

Balls. You will achieve this easily if you get the right car and do not drive lead footed.You better be aware of one thing though, and that is that the aluminium XJ will do better miles to the gallon than the equivalent S-Type. It is lighter, more aerodynamic and the suspension lowers it to the ground on motorway driving. I have had both and am in no doubt about this. The S-Type is arguably the better drive, but an X350 is pretty good.
When people talk on here about an X358 what do they mean? I thought that the model was an X350.

Neither have satnav, one is quite a hack away in Nottingham, can't see where the other one is ('online' apparently, perhaps they could FTP it), both are from dealers. I may have to buy from a dealer but prefer private. All minor points but they add up.
