I'm getting really confused regarding an intermittent oil temp going FSD, sometimes with an associated water temp FSD, and the car saying the car needs oil when it doesn't.

I need some info here because I keep reading conflicting information on the internet. The M5 seems to be the only engine that has an oil temperature gauge. The level sensor on the bottom of the sump only has three wires which means that its only a level sensor and not a temperature sensor as far as I can tell.

And more confusingly the WDS says this

"The oil temperature displayed in the instrument cluster comes via the CAN bus from the digital engine electronics to the instrument cluster. On the S62 engine, the oil temperature shown in the instrument cluster is displayed as a mean value of the oil temperature measured value of the oil level transmitter and the dual coolant temperature sensor (temperature engine exit)."

Can anyone who knows explain how the oil temp is being calculated and where I'm looking for my problem? This seems to give the impression that the level sensor does have a temperature sensor in it.

The level bit in the bottom can use one live, (or +5v prob) and a return for temp, and a return for level.

If the oil level and temp are both playing up, that sender could be damaged.

Thank for replying. I always get the impression that this is the place for discussions about car colour and bimmerboard is the place for discussions regarding the engine/internals.
