Generally I've failed to get along with touch screen devices, and against my better judgement I chose a T-mobile G2 Touch (HTC Hero) for my phone upgrade.

This thing is driving me mad - it has a similar capacitive touch screen to my iPod Touch, which also isn't great, especially useless for typing. It's unresponsive too, but this may be the crappy software.

I knew it was a mistake! cry

Don't they take them back if you don't get on with them?

A while back now my daughter got a phone (Samsung I think) from the Carphone Warehouse and within days she knew she wasn't going to get on with it, she went back and they swapped it for a Sony without question. She just had to have everything as new, in the box etc.

So if you don't like touchscreen, why did you buy one?

Make sure you have no processes/programs running in the background that can seriously slow a phone down.

Problem is I love gadgets, and I assumed it would be much better with the capacitive screen. Maybe it is the crappy software that makes the phone sluggish - I have heard there will be an update eventually.

Have you update the rom? go the t-mobile site and download it if not. I got mine 5 months ago and had to but assumed the new ones would be done.

No issues with response in a g2 for me or my other half who got one after using mine!

I'm not sure - I've had it a couple of months and when I checked I "think" it was on the latest release, but it doesn't seem that straight forward. Thing is from what I can gather there is a new 2.1 release for the HTC hero, but T-mobile users have to wait until T-mobile release their version.

My problems are with the phone, txt and picture messaging feature - important features on a phone!

for messaging - download 'handcent sms', much better than the standard and free

Are you 100% sure you've removed the transparent screen protection film? I used my T-Mobile Pulse for 2 weeks before I realised it had one and after that the touch screen improved dramatically!!! wobble

I had a screen protector on my touch... Blergh. Horrible things. made it all weird and 'wrong'. Took it of. Screen is still as good as new, with no scratches at all.

it was one of those 'skin' ones, when I first got it. It really felt horrid. Well, haven't needed it since anyway, so no biggy.

Still love my Hero but my bugbear with smartphones is there is NEVER enough processing power / memory in them. Mine runs really slowly.

As for "making sure nothing is running/installed" what's the point of having a smart phone then!?

turn off and on regularly, and have a task manager e.g. task killer - you would be suprised how many processes just start themselves up

i dont have any issues with the keypad on the iphone, just have to get into the mindset of if you hit a wrong letter carry on, 9.9 times out of 10 it corrects the word to what you intended.

I read with interest the other day that Apple are the only manufacturer to produce a custom asic for noise cancellation on the touchscreen.

i.e. you could have a phone from somebody else with the exact same capacitive screen as the iPhone but it still won't respond as smoothly / accurately as each phone is kicking out it's own different background electrical noise.

I got a Nokia X6 last week, which is my first touch screen phone and I was expecting it to be difficult to get on with at first but it has been absolutely brilliant.
