I'm having trouble with my front door. It's a porch door, rather like a patio door in that it has normal handles inside/outside and a Yale type lock. A couple of pictures tell a thousand words.

So, obviously you lift the handle upwards to engage the locking 'thingies' then turn the key to lock the door. However, the key will no longer turn in the lock. Rather - the key turns clockwise from 'six o'clock' to 'ten o'clock' then stops and will not budge any further. The lock emerges a few millimetres but that is all. Therefore the door no longer locks.

Now, I've removed the lock mechanism (obviusly my terminology isn't great hehe ) and it turns fully no problems, so the problem is obviously internal to the door. The above picture shows the internals but I have no clue what the expected behaviour is internally.

When I move the handle upwards it 'feels' right in that the lugs along the doors edge move into the correct position, however the lock will not budge.

Many thanks for any pointers!

Never mind a locksmith, you'd better send for Aggie and Kim. It looks like somebody's been wiping their arse on your front door

hehe

Yeah, surprisingly gunky underneath when I removed the handles. Also the pin joining the two handles was very greasy. Do you remove your handles often for a quick spruce up?

Several weeks ago I had a similar problem. Thought then it might be the lock mechanism, so removed all screws from the inside of the door, checked, tightened screws on lock, oiled and fitted with new euro cylinder, and a presto it worked. Also found the lock shoot was slightly warped, so tap with a hammer to realign.

I'm a bit confused myself actually as I know none of the terminology hehe

There's no problem with the removable tumbler mechanism thing. Y'know, the bit I put the key into. That rotates fine all the way round when its out of the door.

The problem is in the door. When the tumbler mechanism revolves with the key it appears to hit the internal bits to the door and wont push any further - therefore the lock bit won't emerge from the door. So what I've done now is spray a whole boatload of WD up into the door into the top of the hole in the door you can see in the pic.

I tried it again but no joy on movement so will leave it to soak overnight. Got to admit, it doesn't feel like it's going to work as it's solid resistance.

you have not made it clear if you are operating the lock when the door is open or shut. Sometimes on UPVC doors, they drop slightly on the closing side, therefore the locking bolt won't enter the slot in the frame. If this is the case, try holding both inner and outer handles and lifting the door slightly.
If you are trying it with the door open, then it sounds like you will have to take the whole sliding mechanism off the edge of the door, take out the lock/latch and inspect everything from there.
Its not rocket science and nothing will explode, it may be the lock itself (not the barrel that takes the key) that has something loose or needs replaced

Thanks topton. It's doing this with the door open as I'm checking it's not just out of alignment, the problem is somewhere in the door.

In the pic of you re-fitting the euro cylinder you have the operating lug at 12 o'clock, outside the body of the cylinder. The lug should be at 6 o'clock in the centre of the lock and on fitting you need to move the lug Slightly either way with the key as you insert it.

Yes I know that, was just holding it up to the door to show which one it was.

Yeah done all of that, but when the cylinder goes back in to the door and is lined up properly, when I turn the key it will not rotate past a certain point, and the lock mechanism will not come out from the door jamb.

It very much sounds like the multipoint lock mechanism is faulty, remove handles, loosen take out all screws from side of door, pull mechanism out, examine, attempt repair or replace. Once you have the mechanism out, any local installer of UPVC doors etc. should be able to either repair or offer replacement.

Well it's out and I haven't a first clue. It doesn't seem to move properly so I think I'm going to have to suck it up. Looking for replacements on the net is a minefield!! It's a Fuhr and the cheapest is 68 quid, rising to 140 quid!!

So, I feel I have exhausted my pidgeon DIY skills so have sucked it up and called out for a locksmith. Doh. Thanks for the pointers though peeps.
