M6 speed camera catches 5,500 drivers in five weeks
Discussion
Wow, must be something obstructing the speed camera signs ... or just very very stupid drivers.

"Road safety bosses say they are stunned after a speed camera caught out more than 5,500 motorists in five weeks.
The camera, on the M6 near Carlisle, was installed to protect workers carrying out repairs and is expected to net £168,000 from fines issued so far.
A Cumbria Safety Cameras spokesman said he could not understand why so many drivers are ignoring the 50mph limit, which is clearly signposted.
Pressure group Safe Speed called the figures "disgusting".
The camera was installed between junctions 43 and 44 of the M6 on 29 January and will stay while bridge repairs are carried out."

Maybe because there's no one working there most of the time? On a local road (A38) an average speed camera system was set up well over a week before any work started at all, and it's active all the time even though work is only done during late evening and night. The really odd thing is a lot of roadworks were completes on the same road last year with closure of one and sometimes two lanes and no speed restrictions were put into force.Edited by Mr2Mike on Monday 5th April 22:10
If 5,500 drivers have been caught speeding, surely at least a couple dozen workmen must have been killed and several hundred injured by speeding drivers, or are we saying that if 5,500 people have broken the law in that area with no consequences (apart from their wallets being lightened), then that particular legal set-up is probably inappropriate?

The reasoning is obvious. I've been up that road about 6 times since the "works" went up. I've never seen any plant there, and at best 3 or 4 blokes stood holding a spade and doing piss all.
I bet if a reporter wanted to show reality, that the majority of those "endangering the workforce" were doing so when noone was working, at night etc etc.
That said, for those that rake through it while lads are working, that is out of order.
