320td Outside temperature reading problem?

My car doesn't have the OBC but I read that when the temperature is below 3 degrees it should show, an audible warning should sound and the rear window should auto-defrost.

There's been a few very cold mornings, some ice on the car (definitely colder than 3) but none of this seems to happen. Am I being a plum and not doing something correctly or what?

Never heard of auto-defrost on an E46.

The chime should be heard upon startup or when the temp goes from 3.5 deg C to 3.0 deg C.

Some people have disconnected it because they find it annoying...
