Any suggestions on where to buy well made, fairly contemporary walnut furniture? Scoured the local (high-end) establishments in and around Glasgow but nothing has hit the mark as yet. We're looking for living room furniture (coffee tables, drawer/door units) to replace fairly cheap and cheerful oak furniture that has served its time! Although we're looking for something fairly contemporary (had considered Hulsta etc.) something art-deco would also be of interest…

Anyone have any suggestions for suppliers in the UK?

Thanks in advance! smile

Have you considered commissioning the pieces? Not as expensive as you would think.

I was after a dining table a few years back and couldn't find what I wanted and someone recommended a cabinet maker to me.

I drew what I wanted and he made it. A really simple and elegant table, very chunky 4" solid walnut with a toughened glass centre. 8' x 4'.

Came in at £800. Cheaper than the veneered tat I'd seen in designer shops.

Take a look at Selva - hand crafted Italian furniture in a wide range of styles. Their Downtown range, walnut, has a 1930s / Deco feel, is superbly made but is pricy. Large dining table, extends to 2.8 metres, is circa £1,800.

+1 for the Bo Concept, bought a dining table and chairs from The Red Brick Mill at Batley, also look and see if Ponsfords in Sheffield have a web site, make sure your sitting down when you look at the prices though !

Thanks for all of the suggestions. We've tried Sterling, Bo Concept, Frasers, John Lewis (not Habitat, yet!) and a couple of others. Found a shop over in Clarkston with a range from Kesterport which looks like it may fit the bill. Still interested in the cabinet maker suggestion too - so if we can agree on a design that may well be an option!

Cheers!

This. We had a bookshelf made by a local furniture company and it wasn't any more expensive than the ready-made stuff they sell.

I'm now going one step further and will be building a dining table myself soon...

Agree with the above, find a good joinery shop and see what they can do

I got quoted the same price for a solid wood coffee table as John lewes wanted for a ready made veneered one which was very similar.

-1 for them. Bought a £300+ coffee table and the legs were flimsy from day 1, have replaced them with legs from a £15 Ikea table and it is fine.

Thanks for all the replies.

Got a quote in for the Kesterport 'Love Letters' sideboard, coffee table and small lamp table and it was pretty much £10k yikes

Looks like signing up to their display days sale would be an option, either that or sell a kidney...
