Here's the logic,

I do about 1 T/D a month and occasional road work, (couple of times a week).

I run a set of wheels with T1-R's for the road and a wider set for the track with Triple 8's, (that are now bald).

There is always the problem of carrying another set of wheels if the weather is dodgy, that is just possible.

The theory is, sell the road wheels and T1-R's, keep the track wheels and buy a set of tyres that are good on the track and reasonable on the road.

I was keen on the new Toyo R1-R's but they are not available in my size!

Any suggestions which make and model may be suitable?

They would have to be good in the dry and fair in the wet.

Am I asking too much?

Last thing,

I have usually run "medium" Triple 8's, are the "hard" suitable and much different?

Looking to achieve a few more miles, (tight asr*e)!

HCM.

I use Kumho Ecsta V70a (hard) on my M3 for both road and track. The stiff sidewall means they are less refined on the road, but acceptable.

Cheaper than 888s too.

As Dan says the Khumos work well on M3s & stripped track/race M3 will be similar weight to yr Chim.

Im running a cracking track/road tyre that may suit you well, problem is availabiliy, can't seem to get any more- Federal 595RS its not quite 888 grip but longer lasting & fine on road, problem is getting more in 17 inch, unless you run the 2 sizes camskill have, unlikley you run a 255 front tho!

Hankook RS2 might suit, less grippy that 888 im gunna try a set on my 'ring car, as that runs 15 inch & its a massive saving price wise.

I'm looking for 215/45 X 17 front on 8" rims.

255/40 X 17 rear on 10" rims

These sizes in the triple 8's come up very wide.

It's the rears that aren't available in the R1-R's.

I will be phoning around for prices tomorrow and will be comparing Khumo's to others.

I think I will go for a hard compound this time and see how they fare.

O/T.........If anyone is interested in my road wheels, (ATP multispoke), and T1-R's, I will be putting them in the classifieds shortly.

R888 and A084R would get my vote...pricey tho.

The a048r are a bit more hard wearing than the r888,but both great tyres

I've used 888 all year round and never had a problem yet. I never take two sets of tyres to a track day can't be bothered with all that changing wheels stuff.

PS never driven in snow smile

Forgot to say I think GG medium is the hardest 888 comes in.

In 17 where price dif is minimal between Rs2 888 & Khumo I'd go Khumo in hard, whereas in 15 its a big jump from RS2 to 888 price to khumo price in 100 quid steps!

Internet heresay only so take with pinch of salt - but R1-R not coping well with hot days tracking, designed as USA autocross tyre, a min or so arseing about in a carpark, not 30 mins on a hot track.

Get your point with the R1-R's.

More tread generally, worse performance!

Bit of research today, Triple 8's and Yoko A048's similar in performance but 8's better on the road.

As for wear, is there a difference?

Bridge tyres at present cheapest;

Toyo's £750ish

Yoko's £770ish

Awaiting Khumo prices.

Any other options that wear well?

Kumho V70a tyres from Camskill;

Total fronts and rears = £548.00, £250-£300 cheaper then the others.

Huge saving, are they that bad?

Available in medium or hard.

Anyone had any experience with the different compounds?

Would these be OK for occasional road use?

Mike,

I ordered a new set of Kumhos for my M3 yesterday.

I drive mine to/from circuits and the Kumhos are fine on the road. I find them much longer lasting than R888s, and they provide a very similar level of grip too.

Would strongly suggest you go for them.

Might be teaching you to suck eggs, but remember that they have a more square shoulder than road tyres, so you might want to drop down a width. I use 225/45/17 all round on my M3, for example.
