my friend has a 528i 2000 model and has the following problems :

Intermittently the speedo light will go out and at the same time the indicators will cease to operate both internally and extarnally, there is also no clicking noise from the flasher unit whilst this is happening. This also affects the hazard warning lights in the same way.

There appears to be a saftey feature though which kicks in when this happens which keeps the outside lights on (even when he turns off the switch for them)and the reverse lights wont work.

Without warning the normal function will return to everything at the same time but again without warning can dissapear as soon as it returned.

A local auto spark plugged his computer into the car and he said it came back with a fault on the light control module. the auto spark says these are a few hundred pounds new but suggested that a 2nd hand one may work but was unsure whether or not these can be used 2nd hand because of codes etc.

does anyone know whether these canbe bought and fitted to other cars of the same model and also if indeed whether any body else has encountered simalar problems and has any other suggestion or opinions on this.

Yep...sounds like the LCM.

This guy can usually fix them:

Although he didn't have success with the one on my wife's car last week. But he is very helpful.

I ended up buying another one off Ebay which fortunately did work straightaway without a re-programme. The only issue is that because this is one of the places (3) the mileage is recorded it now shows a small red dot on the dash indicating/suggesting the mileage may have been tampered with (which is obviously not the case!) but I will have to get the programmed out on Monday.
