heating issue AGAIN
Discussion
So I have taken my car to the garage a couple of times now and they still can't find a problem. But there is one, not sure what though.
I drive the car for a long period of time, and the temp guage starts to wander, and usually the air coming through the heaters is cold. And then suddenly it will return to normal and the air will get hot again. It goes up and down hot and cold and is generally quite random.
However the other day it went up hot, and didn't come down before it got to the red so I pulled over and stopped, popped the bonnet and steam was pouring out of somewhere, I couldn't see where but it was by the filer bottle, and I think might be the big pipe that I think comes from the rad, it has a gasket and this might be loose..
But can anyone make any sense of this? Should I take some pics?

thermostat could be faulty so its not opening/closing when the water gets upto temp which would explain why one moment its too cold (thermostat stuck open) and the next its too hot (thermostat stuck shut)
As for the steam, the water got too hot so pressure built up and has maybe caused a pipe/gasket to split and leak? you say it came from the washer fluid filler or the radiator filler? there is normally a pressure valve on the radiator filler in case of such an event

What have been their answers thus far? the no mention of thermostat surprises me.
it may or may not be the thermostat but it would be worth doing
A new thermostat is around £50-£60 would suggest getting a decent more expensive one as opposed to a cheap non-genuine part
Its not a big job, 2hrs max so again probably £50 tops from a good indy in labour?
As you say take it to another garage tell them the situation and ask if a dodgy thermostat could be a root cause of it

Have you tried checking the expansion tank?
This is the black box attached to the radiator where you top up the coolant.
This is a common fault on E46's and I have just spent the weekend replacing mine. They are known for cracking and and once pressure builds up it is forced out of the damaged area.
Here's a pic of the offending item

Well guess what its been to the garage, and they said there was air in the system, and the viscous fan or something might need new casing in the future but we've tested it and its fine now.
first drive out, same f
king thing, gets to middle point on the guage, cold air coming through, it overheats, re start the car it then starts blowing hot air and is fine for the rest of the journey!!
Why can no bloody place figure out this issue!!!

king useless, this why nobody trusts garages. took me £500 to sort this problem, each time I told them the exact symptons and to give it a drive after they had had a look.
I even had a video of steam coming out from a place.
"its alright mate the technician will be able to sort this fine" Sure he will you thick
.
The search goes on for a garage that isn't full of mouth breathing pikeys and that can be trusted to do the job properly without me worrying ifits been fixed and how much they will charge me if it has to go back!
