Hi have a 2003 5series with the Satnav/TV/Bluetooth pac. The main screen kept going blank and defaulting to the standard computer display. Could not get the sat dvd out of the player in the boot, so held my finger on the power button and up pops the main display not problem, although the dvd still will not eject and as soon as I let go of the eject button the display goes again. Has anyone had the same issue? or know what the problem is?Thanks

Hi there

Does your E39 have that Trafficmaster unit built in? if so, I'll assume the subscription has expired and all that. Whilst my E39 was total poverty spec, I've read that other E39 owners have had issues with their Sat Nav screens, DVD drives etc, and the culprit in some cases has been the trafficmaster unit thingy. It may need disconnecting to restore everything to good working order.

If you don't have that unit or, if after removing it you still get quirky going's on, then something somewhere is on it's way out and probably will give up completely at some point in the near future. Could be a dodgy screen, dry solder joint, failure of an IC or component etc etc.

Very few places I think that still repair these units, although perhaps some are dotted around the country. That'd be your next point of call, and depending on what it is that's wrong, expect a fairly substantial bill for the repair.

these OEM units in the E39/E38 are now between 7 to 10 years old, and they're starting to fail with more frequency, hopefully your's will be an easy fix, else if you take the risk with the Ebay stuff with Screens around £250-350, MK4 DVD units at £275-400, BM54 Amps at like £175-275 which are also 7-10 years old usually you'll have to know that any one of those could fail the week after purchase or a few monhts down the line or fingers crossed, work great for another few years!

Have a go at disconnecting the battery and leaving it for 10 mins or so and re-connecting to it 'resets' everything.

Cheers, Dennis! West London & Slough UK!

Hi Dennis

Thanks a lot for the big reply. Disconnected battery and seems to have done the job. Very bizzare!

Still cannot get the dvd out of the player though.

My X5 similar age has the same challenge. If I pull the fuse then push the button while its waking up after putting the fuse back, I can get the disc out.
