With Q3 being almost identical in strategy to Q2, and most drivers opting to do just one or two flying laps, I wonder if Q3 should be turned into a shoot-out?

What is a shoot-out? Basically, the top 10 drivers from Q2 get one flying lap to nail their qualifying position. The running order for the shoot-out is from slowest to fastest (ie. slowest top 10 driver from Q2 gets the first run in the shoot-out, and the fastest runs last). One flying lap to nail their grid position, with their free choice of fuel load and tyre compound. No mistakes, or it's tough titties!

I think it makes sense because Q2 and Q3 are very similar, and with the lack of fuel load variations, Q3 is somewhat boring. With a shoot-out system, there is huge pressure on each driver, and since only one driver is on track at a time, there are no traffic hindrances. Plus, each driver and his team gets their lion's slice of media attention which is good for the commercial side of the F1 circus. It works extremely well with the Australian V8 Supercars, and I think it will be good for F1 too.

Opinions? Aye and nay?

fking Kiwis with their weird ideas. wink

(I voted yes btw)
but only because the beeb seem to have lost the positions bar along the left of the screen this year. It took a lot of the excitment out of it yesterday.

I voted no, they tried a similar system only a few years ago and it was painfully boring. Also if it rains half-way through then the last few qualifying laps become pointless.

The whole timing presentation was confusing yesterday, I couldnt folow it, or to be honest couldnt be bothered to. Now refueling is out the window we should have qualifying on low fuel like the old days, and stop this rubbish about only having so many tyres, its just petty interference. Just have old fashioned quali, thats it!, sort the grid out, I dont care about tyres, so god only knows what its like for casual observers. Why have two grades of tyre anyway? what on earth does that do for 'the show', and why keep changing colours, stripes on the sidewall, why why why, is like a socialist government, constant meddling, just race the damn cars.

Scrap quali completely and pull the grid positions out of a hat.

Now there are no fuel loads to take in to account, why not just revert to the old format? 1 hour session, go out as many times as your allocated tyres will allow?? All this Q1, Q2, Q3 stuff seems pointless now?

A shoot out between the drivers or the commentators, or maybe both? That would be a better watch that we saw today.
