The cam and crank + all bearings and rings, just re-used the lifters.

Should I have primed the lifters?

You need to replace the lifters with a new cam, they bed in together.

the lifters should have been replaced along with the cam as previousley stated, you will also need to set the pre-load with all the lifters drained of oil.

Never heard of anyone priming the lifters, not sure you could really as the internal spring is a bit stiff. I suppose dunking them in an oil bath for a week might get some oil in by capillary action but I don't imagine they did that at the factory.

Exactly what I did when I helped someone change the cam in my old 350: the lifters were submerged in an oil bath for a few days beforehand.

Now it's all together it's six of one half dozen of the other. If you leave it alone the cam may - or may not - fail prematurely because the followers are old ones. If you open it up and replace the followers the cam might be OK but then there's the expense of the new followers, plus also the hassle and expense of opening it up, new gaskets, coolant and oil.

I would be tempted to leave it alone, and live with a bit of cam ticking, whch might go away on its own after it beds in a bit and the followers pump up fully. I depends how much your cam cost, I spose.

Agree that lifters should have been changed with cam but also agree with Adam's appraisal of the situation. I've used the following in the past and found it to be pretty effective - got to be worth a try before deciding whether (or not) to strip it all down again?
