Is it a straight forward swap for an early LT-77 gearbox to a T5 box?

Well to be honest, I have only driven the car once and dont pick it up until friday, I previously owned a Chimaera with the T5 box and during my short test drive I just didnt get on with it as well. Finding 1st, 4th and reverse, just appeared to be a challenge, although the dealer told me there was could be some adjustment made, and would try to improve this. Just wondered if it was a bolt off and on swap, but apparently not the case!

If the stick is a bit whooly and hits the gate instead of sliding into gear, I would get an experienced garaged to check the gear linkage - iirc the lever is spring loaded and when the spring wears, gear changing becomes awkward(simple and cheap fix). My old LT77 was much smoother than my T5 box for gear changes

That appears to be the problem entirely, 4th appeared to have a almost a slight dog leg to engage aand first was very awkward, will see how it goes when i go to collect it on friday and see how it has improved if any.

yeah..it is. Drop off at a garage spend many thousands of pounds (more then 3, and less then 5 )....and six months latter voula

to be honest... in hind site should have just got my LT77 repaired, the benifits are def not worth the agroo and cost..... even if you did it yourself IMHO.... and the LT77 appears to have a longer 2nd gear which I miss.

Drive it for a while - you'll get used to its idiosyncrasies, probably.
When I swapped a LT77 for another LT77 it took me weeks to get used to it - it was just a smidgen out and finding third was a challenge for a while. Back to the original now and I'd gotten so used to the interloper it's taken another couple of hundred miles to re-adjust.

I'd refresh the ball on the bottom of the stick and a give it a change of oil before rebuilding, as well as checking the mounts?

My Pre-Cat has the LT-77 it was rebuilt by the previous owner its as smooth as a Kashmir codpiece,just selecting reverse is sometimes a bit strange its better to select second and then reverse for some strange reason.Or that could be just me

Where's the best source of the ball for the gearlever, and do you fit it dry or with some lubrication?

well do we lubricate and with what ???? I have my ball next to me and about to fit into the plate

Its probably a bit late by now, but I don't think I lubed mine, although I can't imagine a smear of high temp grease would do it any harm

Would anyone happen to know how much a gearbox rebuild would cost for an lt-77? Could anyone recommend somewhere, ideally in the Midlands? Just for reference for now really, cheers.
