In my airing cupboard there's a redundant double pole switch for an immersion heater that's long gone after a change to a combi boiler by the previous owner. It's connected with chunky looking T&E cable and the neon doodah lights up when I flick the switch so it has power, but no cable connected on the output. There's a dedicated 16A circuit breaker in the fusebox labelled 'immersion' too.

So, can I change the faceplate for a single 13A socket outlet OK? Would be useful to have access to a socket on the landing for vacuuming etc. rather than stretching out of the bedrooms.

Also, should I down rate the circuit breaker? I'm thinking not, the next same make/model circuit breaker available to buy appears to be 6A.

No real problem with fitting a plug socket - the breaker is there to protect the wiring so you can leave it as it is.

The fuse in the plug will protect the wiring to whatever you have plugged in, so it's all good.
