Was just about to order a new guitar but it comes with a choice of Rosewood and Maple fretboards! Which one do you prefer? I'm not brilliant at making big decisions like this rolleyes

Rosewood

Maple

Maple = brighter sound and slightly faster due to the gloss finish.

Rosewood = not quite so fast but a more mellow sound.

So the choice is yours - try both if you can and see which appeals to you more.

Or just buy one of each like I did!

Agree with the character comments above. Personally I prefer rosewood as it feels softer to me and seems to have more feel by allowing a bit more control?

Go to your local friendly shop, sit down with both guitars / necks and play both, choose the one that feels nicest to your hands and buy that one ...

edited to add, and often you'll end up buying a different guitar to the one you thought you'd buy before you walked in there !

I can never decide which i like better, so have ended up with a collection consisting of both. Tbh, neither makes much difference to me in terms of sound or playability, and many times I have just gone on the aesthetics of the axe under consideration - some just seem to suit maplewood better

Fair enough. I've taken all that on board, but I can't even decide which one looks better (above)

If my current guitar came with the option of an ebony 'board, I'd have specified it in a shot.

It didn't, so I couldn't.

Shame, as I love ebony 'boards.

Ebony. Much nicer but more or less banned by treaty these days. My '73 SG is so illegal it's not funny - it's made of Brazilian rainforest wood, and all of the ivory bits actually came off an elephant...
