My backbox is currently dangling loose on the back of my Mk3 Mondeo TDCi - its become detached (following an accident then a speed bump) from the main pipe.

Assuming I can detach the back box completely so it doesn't come off at speed, will the car be ok to drive in terms of the ECU etc? I'm concerned that the lack of backbox may somehow affect engine management and leave me stranded somewhere or in a uber-slow 'limp home' mode.

I've gotta go 20 miles up the motorway and A-road.

Cheers!

It'll be fine, pull off the loose part and prepare to sound like a 90's chaved up Nova with Peco bean can poking from the rear.

You will be fine - fuel consumption may be horrid though.

Best exhaust for a turbo diesel is no exhaust. It may sound like ass, but should go better. smile

You should be fine - my Mk 3 Mondeo's backbox rather inconsiderately decided to just 'fall off'. Didn't even make that much extra noise on the way to the garage.

The insurance sent someone to recover the car today - we pulled off the back box and the driver took the car away. To be honest, it didn't sound too bad at all - well, not at low revs anyway. I haven't had a call back from them so I guess he managed to get back to the garage ok!

Cheers for your replies!
